3 Registered nurses and other allied health professionals have specialised skills when providing particular clinical care however there are some tasks which can be undertaken by others. To undertake these tasks those involved in care need to know what signs and symptoms should be reported and to have knowledge and skills. We believe all providers want to provide clinical care that is best practice and based on strong evidence. We want our care to be comprehensive and involve a wide network of support. In our last booklet we talked about the importance of recognising an unexpected deterioration or change in a consumer’s health and responding to these in a timely manner. We covered most of the high impact or high prevalence health risks in aged care. This booklet builds on that information. Many people living at home with a chronic health condition or a disability present with multiple health conditions that require different types of assistance. This is called co-morbidity or geriatric syndrome in older people. We encourage you all to be aware of your scope of practice, pursue further education and become as informed as you can about health conditions. Most people want to remain in their own homes and receive high quality care from skilled and confident staff. I hope this booklet, which can be used in conjunction with The Practical Handbook for Basic Clinical Care in the Home (our red booklet), assists you in some way.
