LIBERATING EDUCATION 099 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 Bantry Bay Year 9 Commerce Market Day HUMAN SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT (HSIE) B Mr G Sacco Head of HSIE (B) HSIE B has had a year of success and excitement in 2024. Reflecting on the achievements of 2024, it is evident that this year was packed with learning and significant events for the HSIE B faculty, particularly in Geography, Commerce, Business Studies and Economics. HSC Achievements The year commenced with a celebration of the 2023 HSC results. The HSIE B faculty witnessed outstanding performances from the cohort, particularly in Business Studies, Economics and Geography: • Business Studies: The 2023 cohort consisted of 74 students, with 74.66% achieving a Band 5 or 6. This result significantly exceeds the state average of 36.08%. Special recognition goes to the dedicated teachers of this course: Maria Marrapodi, Constance Lukas, and Danielle Laoulach, whose efforts greatly contributed to these excellent outcomes. • Economics: The small Economics cohort for 2023 consisted of 16 students. Seven students achieved a Band 6, while six students attained a Band 5. Overall, 81.25% of students achieved a Band 5 or 6, which is considerably higher than the state average of 48.52%. The exceptional teaching by Adrian Byrne played a crucial role in these impressive results. • Geography: The 2023 cohort consisted of 8 students, with 50% achieving a Band 5 or 6. This result exceeds the state average of 41.93%. Felicia Ho managed the HSC Geography students excellently last year, getting great results from the small cohort. Year 7 and 10 Geography Excursions Stage 4 (Year 7) and Stage 5 (Year 10) completed their compulsory Geography fieldwork excursions to Bantry Bay and Cronulla, respectively. Year 7 students explored senior geography concepts for the first time through hands-on activities at Bantry Bay Bushland. Meanwhile, Year 10 students examined the coastal landscape at Cronulla Beach, focusing on coastal landforms and human impacts on the area. Having attended these excursions in Semester 1, I witnessed firsthand how engaged the students were with the content and how they improved their geographical skills through practical experiences. Year 9 Commerce Market Day The Year 9 Market Day was a resounding success this year, with students raising over $5,000 for their chosen charity. They applied their theoretical knowledge from Commerce to promote and sell food products through their own businesses. This event would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of the Year 9 Commerce team—Danielle, Thomas, and Constance—who did an amazing job organising and managing the day. Acknowledgment of Faculty HSIE B is fortunate to have a team of teachers with unwavering dedication. I am grateful for a faculty that consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that both students and colleagues receive the best support possible. This year has presented challenges, yet it has also been enjoyable due to the great support from my faculty and the wider school community. As we look ahead to the upcoming year, I am excited to see what new opportunities await HSIE B!
