From meaningful exchanges with pen pals to immersion days, they have delved into diverse experiences, building both linguistic skills and cultural insight. This year, St Patrick’s College was privileged to host three Language Assistants, Anna, Lucia, and Angela, with support from Co.As.It. Their expertise and enthusiasm quickly made them integral members of our Languages Department, particularly benefitting our Year 12 students as they prepared for their HSC Oral Examinations. The positive feedback from students highlights how much they have gained from this extra support. Students of French and Italian were also recognised for their hard work through external awards. Jeremy Simonetto (Year 12) achieved third place in the Italian Education Awards, submitting an insightful essay on global conflict and its impact on peace. Italian students Elio Alessi (Year 9) and Valentino Romeo were honoured by the Marco Polo Italian School of Sydney for their dedication in their study of Italian. In the NSW Regional Education Perfect Championship, our school placed third globally, with four students achieving Emerald Awards, ranking in the top 1.5% worldwide. Throughout the year, students extended their learning beyond the classroom. Hosting six exchange students from Liceo Blaise Pascal in Pomezia, Italy, allowed our students to share daily life and strengthen bonds with their Italian peers, creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. A huge thank you goes to the host families and teachers for their generosity and hospitality. Languages Day offered Year 8 students the chance to celebrate language learning with pasta making, bocce, Italian gestures, and a cultural quiz, while Year 10 students enjoyed an Interaction Day with their pen pals from Cerdon College Merrylands, forging new friendships over shared meals and Italian conversation. These experiences provide our students with invaluable opportunities to apply their language skills in real-world contexts, fostering curiosity, empathy, and a broader worldview. We are immensely proud of the dedication shown by our students and teachers, whose passion brings our Languages Department to life. As we farewell our Year 12 language students, we wish them the very best in their future endeavours. As the new Head of Department, it has been lovely to look back on the year that has been a journey of discovery and connection in the world of languages. We look forward to more exciting adventures in the years to come.
