LIBERATING EDUCATION 103 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 Ms J Cupac Head of Vocational Education Training VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING Undertaking a VET course at St Patrick’s College offers students a dynamic pathway to nationally recognised qualifications that directly align with industry needs. These courses build confidence and improve essential communication and interpersonal skills through hands-on learning, closely reflecting real-world job requirements. Students also gain practical experience and valuable links to local industry through work placements. In addition, our VET courses support academic achievement, with students earning dual qualifications that open doors to apprenticeships, traineeships, and higher education pathways. The VET Construction course at St Patrick’s College had another successful year, with three classes each in Year 11 and Year 12, reflecting its popularity and practical value. With a teaching team that included Mr Viney for Year 12 and Mr Calavassy, Mr Davidson and Mr Menck for Year 11, students engaged in hands-on projects such as cement float and flooring, concrete pours, and wall framing, which provided them with essential trade skills. This course is particularly beneficial for those pursuing apprenticeships or careers in construction project management, architecture, engineering or property development. Key units of competencies completed by students included using carpentry tools, reading and interpreting plans, planning and organising work, carrying out measurements and calculations, and sustainable practices in construction. Under the guidance of their teachers Mr Freere, and Ms Duff, the students successfully managed and executed several high-profile events, demonstrating their skills in lighting, audio, staging, customer service, and vision systems. Throughout the year, students were involved in the bump-in, operation, and bump-out of various significant events, including the Opening Mass, the Mother’s Day Mass, the Performing Arts Production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Performing Arts Showcase at Marie Bashir Hall, and the High Achievers Ceremony. These events provided a comprehensive platform for students to apply their learning in real-world settings, ensuring they gained valuable industry experience. Under the instruction of Ms Tripodi for Year 12 and Ms Tripodi and Ms Patterson for Year 11, VET Hospitality students at St Patrick’s College gained substantial practical experience in the new Hospitality kitchens. Year 12 students put into practice their culinary skills by preparing and serving a diverse menu for the Staff Appreciation morning tea. Meanwhile, Year 11 students took the lead in managing the Year 12 Graduation lunch and serving at the Old Boys Business Dinner. These experiences highlighted their ability to plan, coordinate, and execute large-scale events, and deliver high-quality hospitality experiences. We also celebrated our first Year 12 VET Hospitality graduating class and eagerly await their HSC results. Guided by Mr Istifan, the VET Information and Digital Technology course at St Patrick’s College offered students practical experience in high-demand skills throughout the year. Year 11 students developed a mobile app from scratch, honing programming, database, and user experience design skills, and participated in an ICT workshop focused on diagnostic tools and troubleshooting. Year 12 students took on real-world web development projects, designing websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and creating interactive multimedia presentations.
