CO-CURRICULAR 167 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 GOLF Mr A Viney MIC Golf The team consisted of Captain Tadgh Murphy, Luke Bromfield, Joe Doran, Lucas Daher, Oliver Quinn and Anthony Del Popolo. As golf is a summer sport, the result is only known in the first half of the following year. We have six games in Term 4 and six games in Term 1. The format of the competition is “matchplay” where the differences in handicaps between the two players are use to calculate which holes a player will receive a stroke. We started round 7 in 2024 with 48 points on the table. We were 13 points behind leaders Knox but only two behind second place. It was going to be a tough six weeks. Our first game was against St Ignatius where we had two wins and two losses. On the day Lucas Daher played in the monthly medal round at Strathfield Golf Club at 7am and then turned up at North Ryde Golf Club to play in the school competition. He was against a formidable opponent and went down on the 17th 2/1. He still showed a lot of courage to turn up and play. Our second game was against Knox, and boy, were they a hot unit on the day. We did not manage a win in any game—even the “little master” was troubled. We all agreed it was just one of those days. Our third game was against Scots College where we had two wins and two losses. Lucas and Joe Doran were just on fire. Poor Luke Bromfield just could not hit a ball right today and he finished his game early. Our fourth game was against Newington, and Joey Doran was up against his old foe, Beau. They have had some monumental battles on the golf course over the years. Joe went down, but we picked up three wins on the day—the most memorable being from our captain courageous, Tadgh Murphy, who won his game one-up with the final putt on the last hole! Our fifth game was against Barker and we had two wins and two losses. Joey Doran and Lucas Daher won comfortably and although they tried hard, Oliver Quinn and Anthony Del Popolo struggled against good opponents. Our final game of the season and the competition was against St Joseph’s. We recorded one win, one square, and two losses. However, it was the Joe Doran Show on the day. He birdied the first four holes and his poor opponent, Michael, was simply blown away. When other convenors heard Joe was four under, they came over to watch. It was a wonderful way to finish a strong season for the College’s best golfer. Every player on the team gave their best effort each weekend. They faced opponents of varying ability—some very strong, others less so—but it never mattered. They were gracious in both victory and defeat. The team was always immaculately dressed and consistently polite and courteous to officials from other schools. We finished in fifth place overall. While it was difficult to climb the ladder with the results we achieved, it was a privilege to be part of such a great competition. After my mother passed in February 2023, our family had long hoped to establish a golf trophy in honour of our late parents. This year, the M.A. and J.M. Viney Memorial Prize – The Golf Champion Trophy was crafted from a 1930s silver Claret Jug. The recipient is chosen by the Golf MIC in consultation with the team. The winner for 2024—undisputed—is Joe Doran.
