CO-CURRICULAR 168 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 Early morning training sessions, which both startled the senses and elevated the aerobic rate, signalled the start of a new swim season in early November. The squad looked forward to a competitive calendar. The South Harbour Invitational held at Trinity Grammar was the first competitive meet the squad faced this season. Against strong competition, our SPC swimmers performed well. Podium finishes included: 100m Freestyle opens, 1st, Jack Taylor 50m Backstroke, 12 years, 3rd, Zac Bromfield 50m Breaststroke, 16 years, 3rd Jack Taylor 50m Freestyle, 16 years, 2nd Jack Taylor For the squads first competitive swim, times were certainly solid. Our St Patrick’s Invitational Carnival concluded the 2023 school competition for the squad. Times continued to improve based on training and our placings were solid. Jack Taylor is congratulated for his U17, 50 metre freestyle swim where he set a new record of 24.29 seconds. Early February 2024 saw the St Patrick’s swim squad return to training and staff member, Miss Jane Kent coaching the team. Her experience was quickly reflected as she homed in on the technical aspects of stroke correction and endurance. The House Swimming Carnival saw a broad sweep of personal bests swum. After several tight contests across the day, our age champions were decided. Swimmers such as Austin Hall, Jack Taylor, Matthew Calderan, Archie Behan, and Declan Trainor had significant swim programs on the night. The squad swam well with many personal bests achieved. The squad finished on a high, remaining very competitive and celebrating as our senior age group claimed the Senior Shield. The Independent Schools Association Carnival is the highlight of the season. Squad members compete against very strong competition and personal bests are chased throughout the day. Recognition must go to the following swimmers who earned podium finishes and competed at the Combined Independent Schools Meet. He broke the 17 years 50m freestyle record with a new ISA time of 24.1 seconds. He also, equalled the ISA 17 years 50m butterfly record with a time of 26 seconds. A fantastic performance! The SPC Swim Squad consists of a wonderful group of dedicated swimmers who focus on improving endurance and speed. They are friendly and support their teammates with enthusiasm.
