LIBERATING EDUCATION 093 ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE STRATHFIELD LUMEN 2024 Year 9 English ENGLISH Mr A Leslie Head of English In the ever-evolving world of education, it is easy to forget that the true purpose of teaching English goes far beyond simply helping students read and write. While literacy is undeniably essential, the heart of our English curriculum at St Patrick’s is rooted in something deeper: the power of language to shape young minds. As educators, we have the unique opportunity to introduce our students to narratives that challenge their views, spark their imaginations, and broaden their understanding of the world. We do not just want them to learn about texts; we want them to engage with them in ways that are meaningful and transformative, pushing them to think critically about their lives and the world around them. In 2024 we have introduced the new English Syllabus for Years 7 – 10, which was developed to provide a more comprehensive and engaging learning experience. With the new syllabus, there is an emphasis on developing deeper analytical and creative skills. This will soon lead to a new Stage 6 syllabus. The implementation process is not just a matter of compliance but provides us with the opportunity to review our texts and teaching practices. We have done this by ensuring that we maintain the tradition that we have as a faculty of introducing the boys to quality literature as well as newer texts that relate more directly to their own time and culture. We began the year by celebrating the HSC results of the Class 2023. In addition to 8 Band 6 results in English Advanced, this cohort achieved the strongest English Standard results in over 20 years. This exceptional performance reflects the dedication of both students and teachers. The strong focus that we have had on developing writing skills is clearly showing improvement in student outcomes. At the beginning of the year, we welcomed Mr Thomas Svicarovich and Ms Frances Saad to the college and the English faculty and at the end, we said thank you and farewell to Mr Richard Minter after 12 years of service. English teachers play such a crucial role in shaping students’ communication skills, critical thinking, and creativity. By guiding students through the complexities of language and literature, they help form the minds of the next generation. Beyond just teaching words and rules, English teachers inspire students to express themselves confidently and think analytically, and in doing so shape the minds of the next generation.
