Mid Western Living

Tucked among the vines on the grounds of Robert Stein Vineyard, Pipeclay Pumphouse has long been one of Mudgee’s most celebrated dining destinations. Over the past twelve years, the restaurant has earned a reputation for quality, creativity, and warm hospitality - and under the thoughtful leadership of owner Lara Crestani, it’s entering an exciting new era. With deep family roots in the region - her late grandfather, Robert Stein, was a pioneer in Mudgee’s winemaking scene - Lara brings both heritage and a fresh perspective to Pipeclay. Since taking the reins, she’s led the transition from a fine-dining, degustation-only venue to one that offers a more relaxed, vibrant and family-friendly experience. The result is a restaurant that feels both elevated and approachable, without losing the heart of what makes Pipeclay so special. This year, Lara has led the restaurant into a new chapter, introducing an à la carte menu for the first time - moving away from the exclusively degustation-style format that had A FRESH TAKE ON VINEYARD DINING “Some of the dishes on our menu are recipes I love to cook at home - including one passed down from my grandmother. It’s not just about the food; it’s about how you feel when you’re here.” — Lara Crestani defined Pipeclay in years past. The shift brings a more flexible and family-friendly approach to dining, while still celebrating seasonal produce and bold, expressive flavours. And for those who prefer to leave it in the chef’s hands - or simply want a taste of tradition - a curated Chef’s Selection remains available, offering a modern take on the classic degustation experience. “I didn’t come from a formal hospitality background,” Lara reflects. “But I’ve always believed in the power of food to bring people together. This place is part of our family’s story, and I want it to feel personal, welcoming, and real.” Lara works closely with her tight-knit team across all areas of the business, from shaping the menu to ensuring the warm, attentive service Pipeclay is known for. “I’m proud to lead a team that’s genuinely passionate about what we do,” she says. “And I’m so grateful to the local community and visiting guests for their continued support - it means the world.” Pipeclay is more than a restaurant. It’s a place where families gather, where visitors linger over long lunches, and where memories are made. And for Lara, it’s also deeply personal: “This is where my kids have grown up, where friendships have become family. I want every guest to feel like they’re part of something special when they dine with us.”
