WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 7 CELEBRATING REGIONAL EXCELLENCE The 2025 Western NSW Business Awards shone a light on the talent, tenacity and innovation of our region’s small business community. The very best of Western NSW’s business community was on show at the 2025 Western NSW Business Awards, with a vibrant gala evening held at Dubbo RSL Club. With over 200 business leaders in attendance, the night was a celebration of innovation, resilience, and community spirit across the region. Topsoil Organics, a Forbes-based enterprise with a strong focus on sustainability and regenerative agriculture, took out the coveted title of 2025 Business of the Year. The judges commended their ambitious approach to environmental innovation and their contribution to local economic development through initiatives like the Central West Nutrient Return Centre and the soon-to-launch Regional Regenerative Energy Hub. But it wasn’t just the big players in the spotlight. Mudgee’s own Pebbly Path, founded by the ever-creative Tash Davis, was named winner of Excellence in Micro Business - a well-deserved recognition for her passion, ingenuity, and commitment to creating joyful, quality treats with a unique regional flair. Pebbly Path’s handcrafted rocky road and artisan sweets have become local favourites, with the brand growing steadily while staying true to its small-batch values. Adding another local connection to the evening, Rebecca Saunders, Editor of Mid-Western Living Magazine, took to the stage as Master of Ceremonies. Her role brought warmth and professionalism to the night, guiding attendees through each inspiring moment and celebrating the achievements of finalists from across the region. This year’s awards featured winners from Forbes, Bathurst, Mudgee, Lithgow, Orange and Dubbo - showcasing the diverse and dynamic nature of Western NSW’s business community. With challenges still present for many regional businesses, the evening served as a powerful reminder of the resilience, creativity, and community spirit that define our region. Winners from the night will now go on to represent Western NSW at the State Business Awards in October - with strong hopes that the region will again shine on the statewide stage. ____ For a full list of winners and more information, visit businessnsw.com

Tucked among the vines on the grounds of Robert Stein Vineyard, Pipeclay Pumphouse has long been one of Mudgee’s most celebrated dining destinations. Over the past twelve years, the restaurant has earned a reputation for quality, creativity, and warm hospitality - and under the thoughtful leadership of owner Lara Crestani, it’s entering an exciting new era. With deep family roots in the region - her late grandfather, Robert Stein, was a pioneer in Mudgee’s winemaking scene - Lara brings both heritage and a fresh perspective to Pipeclay. Since taking the reins, she’s led the transition from a fine-dining, degustation-only venue to one that offers a more relaxed, vibrant and family-friendly experience. The result is a restaurant that feels both elevated and approachable, without losing the heart of what makes Pipeclay so special. This year, Lara has led the restaurant into a new chapter, introducing an à la carte menu for the first time - moving away from the exclusively degustation-style format that had A FRESH TAKE ON VINEYARD DINING “Some of the dishes on our menu are recipes I love to cook at home - including one passed down from my grandmother. It’s not just about the food; it’s about how you feel when you’re here.” — Lara Crestani defined Pipeclay in years past. The shift brings a more flexible and family-friendly approach to dining, while still celebrating seasonal produce and bold, expressive flavours. And for those who prefer to leave it in the chef’s hands - or simply want a taste of tradition - a curated Chef’s Selection remains available, offering a modern take on the classic degustation experience. “I didn’t come from a formal hospitality background,” Lara reflects. “But I’ve always believed in the power of food to bring people together. This place is part of our family’s story, and I want it to feel personal, welcoming, and real.” Lara works closely with her tight-knit team across all areas of the business, from shaping the menu to ensuring the warm, attentive service Pipeclay is known for. “I’m proud to lead a team that’s genuinely passionate about what we do,” she says. “And I’m so grateful to the local community and visiting guests for their continued support - it means the world.” Pipeclay is more than a restaurant. It’s a place where families gather, where visitors linger over long lunches, and where memories are made. And for Lara, it’s also deeply personal: “This is where my kids have grown up, where friendships have become family. I want every guest to feel like they’re part of something special when they dine with us.”
WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 11 BOOK YOUR TABLE Located just ten minutes from Mudgee’s town centre, the restaurant offers both lunch and dinner services, with seasonal hours and menus that evolve throughout the year. With warm service, thoughtful food, and sweeping views of the vines, it’s a place where every visit feels like something worth celebrating. Bookings are essential - particularly on weekends and during peak periods - so plan ahead and make your reservation to experience this next chapter in Mudgee dining. ___ Located on the grounds of Robert Stein Vineyard Pipeclay Lane, Mudgee Bookings essential | (02) 6373 3998 pipeclaypumphouse.com.au @pipeclaypumphouse INSPIRED BY MEDITERRANEAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN FLAVOURS What was once a strictly fine-dining, multi-course affair is now a generous à la carte offering, inspired by the bright, shareable dishes of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Expect bold spices, fresh herbs, seasonal produce and a style of eating that encourages conversation and connection. “Our new menu is filled with the kind of food I love to cook at home,” Lara shares. “There’s even a dish inspired by my grandmother’s recipe. It’s soulful, flavourful food - designed to be shared, remembered, and enjoyed with the people you love and laugh with.” Diners can enjoy an ever-evolving selection of plates that balance creativity with comfort. It’s food that suits the surroundings: expansive vineyard views, long lunches, and the slow rhythm of country hospitality.
12 | Mid-Western Living WINTER 2025 In the dusty folds of rural NSW, where backroads wind through gum trees and gold-tinged paddocks, a new kind of cycling event is stirring both tyres and souls. Marys Mayhem, the third in Graveleur’s Bushranger Series, isn’t just another race - it’s a rally cry for adventure, inclusion, and community connection. At its core is Mike Israel - father, endurance cyclist, and founder of Graveleur. Mike’s life has revolved around cycling for the better part of two decades, and he’s been lucky to cycle all around the world. Now he’s sharing his passion with anyone interested in riding a bike, and has traded race kits for gravel bikes and long-haul rides through some of the most remote and rugged terrain in the country. “I started Graveleur back in 2017 with a few mates looking for dirt roads to ride,” Mike recalls. “It grew into something much bigger - a national community of over 6,500 riders who love getting off the beaten path and supporting the regional towns they pass through.” That ethos - explore, connect, support - is the beating heart of Marys Mayhem, which is held in and around Mudgee each year. The name pays tribute to Mary Ann Bugg, a fearless and independent Worimi woman, widely recognised as Australia’s first female bushranger. Her legacy - defiant, resourceful, and strong - resonates through every kilometre of this event. WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 13 “Mudgee was a natural choice,” Mike says. “It’s got amazing dirt roads, scenic country, a cracking food scene and great places to stay. Plus, the local cycling club and community have been incredibly supportive.” That community spirit runs deep. From the Rotary Clubs of Rylstone and Mudgee to the CWA branches in Gulgong and Rylstone, local groups have thrown their weight behind the event - staffing checkpoints, baking cakes, offering first aid, and creating a festival-like energy riders can feel every step of the way. The local business partnerships are just as thoughtful. The festival kicks off on Friday night with registration and a bike expo at Three Tails Brewery. Small Batch Brewery serves as the official event centre on Saturday with post ride drinks, food and music till 5pm. The party continues back in town with Kelly’s Irish Pub offering a special dinner deal for all riders and their entourage. The Property Shop, Giant Mudgee, and The Globe Hotel Rylstone are also providing key support to the event, as are industry sponsors Hydraplay Hydration and the Mental Wheels Foundation - ensuring the event is powered by passion at every level. Their contributions go beyond logos and products; they’re helping create an experience that feels welcoming and truly connected to the heart of the community. Get involved in Marys Mayhem 2025: Visit: graveleur.cc/marys-mayhem-event-page Follow: @graveleur But what truly sets Marys Mayhem apart is its inclusivity. “Graveleur is for everyone,” Mike says. “Whether you’re twelve or seventy, on a carbon race bike or a hand-me-down hybrid, there’s a route for you.” With three course lengths available and discounts for families and clubs, it’s a rare event that invites all comers - not just seasoned cyclists. The weekend wraps with a bustling community market outside the Globe Hotel, where last year “practically every resident from Rylstone came out,” Mike smiles, “We felt so welcomed. It was magic.” In the spirit of Mary Ann Bugg herself, Marys Mayhem is bold, inclusive, and unforgettable. Whether you’re pedalling or cheering from the sidelines, one thing is certain - this ride leaves its mark. With thanks to our local sponsors:

WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 15 As the crisp air of winter settles across the Mudgee region, the landscape transforms into a serene wonderland. Nestled in the hills with four distinct seasons, the Mudgee Region is known for its short but strikingly cold and frosty winters, a time when nature reveals a different kind of beauty. The staff at Mudgee Nursery believe winter is not a season to endure, but one to embrace. Outdoor living doesn’t end when the temperature drop; it simply changes form. Across the Mudgee region, families and friends gather in cosy backyards around crackling firepits, sharing stories under the stars and enjoying the warmth of good company. A well-planned garden shines all year round, and winter offers a unique opportunity to highlight structure, texture, and seasonal fragrance. At Mudgee Nursery, staff specialise in helping you create an outdoor space that thrives even in the coldest months. From firepits to potted gardens to deciduous trees and winter colour, they can help through each stage of your winter garden planning. By blending evergreen and deciduous plants, you can ensure that your garden has life and interest throughout winter. Evergreens such as Camellias, Magnolias, and Conifers provide lush structure, while the bare branches of deciduous trees like Maples, Elms and Ornamental Pears create dramatic silhouettes against the winter sky. Sprinkle through a good mix of Australian natives and you will have something flowering even in the coldest months of the year. Winter gardens don’t just look beautiful, they can smell incredible too. Carefully chosen winter-scented plants bring a sensory richness to your outdoor space. At Mudgee Nursery, you’ll find fragrant varieties like Daphne, Winter Honeysuckle, Wintersweet, winter flowering Viburnums, and Sweet Osmanthus. Their delicate blooms and heady aromas bring joy to chilly mornings and long, cosy evenings. Add pops of colour with winter flowering annuals like violets, stock and pansies and you are well on your way to a garden full of winter interest. Deciduous trees fall into dormancy during our colder season, and this means it is peak season for bare root trees and shrubs. Fruiting trees, colourful shrubs, roses and ornamental trees of all shapes, sizes and colours flood the nursery for you to choose from. It is a very exciting time of the year for gardeners! Mid-year in temperate NSW is a great time to be in the winter food garden as well with brassicas, an abundance of herbs, leafy greens, stir fry veg and plenty of other edibles reaching harvesting stage. More goodness for the winter kitchen. Mudgee Nursery staff are happy to guide you through what can go into the food garden during the cooler months of the year. Whether you’re planning a new backyard fire pit area, choosing hardy winter plants, or simply seeking inspiration, the team at Mudgee Nursery are happy to help. Their passion for the Mudgee region’s seasonal beauty is reflected in every plant, piece of advice, and each winter garden wonderland that they help create. 16 | Mid-Western Living WINTER 2025 A Seed Planted in Autumn 2005 The roots of Mudgee Fine Foods go back to a pivotal food industry workshop held on 22 February 2005 - a collaborative session involving TAFE NSW, AusIndustry, and Mid-Western Regional Council. It brought together producers, processors and enthusiasts with a shared goal: showcase Mudgee’s food potential. Mudgee Fine Foods Incorporated was officially established on 30 March 2005, but the momentum started weeks earlier with the inaugural Mudgee Harvest Celebration, held from 17–19 March 2005. This three-day event included vineyard walks, food-and-wine pairings, farm visits and - most importantly - the first Farmers’ Market, held in the grounds of St Mary’s Catholic Church. What began as a small gathering of food lovers has grown into one of regional NSW’s most vibrant and enduring community markets. Now celebrating its 20th year, Mudgee Fine Foods continues to connect growers, makers and eaters in the most delicious of ways. CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF LOCAL FLAVOUR Mudgee Fine Foods celebrates two decades of markets, makers and meaningful connection. Foodie Founders & Local Legends At its heart, Mudgee Fine Foods was always a community effort. The founding committee included some of the region’s most passionate producers - Angela Leonard (Angela’s Edibles), Simon Staines, Ant Barton (Spicers Creek Tomatoes), John Grant (High Valley Cheese), Angela & Michael Tarte (Melrose Venison), Marg & Peter Burns (native fish), and many others. A formal public meeting was soon held at The Stables on 3 May 2005, aimed at building a network to support and promote Mudgee-grown food. From this, a comprehensive Growers List was born, guiding stallholder selection from a 100 food-mile radius. “It was about celebrating local produce, connecting producers, and bringing food back to its roots.”
WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 17 From Pop-Up to Powerhouse Over the past two decades, Mudgee Fine Foods has become far more than a monthly market. It has hosted: • Farm Walks and Chef’s Table events • Mudgee Fine Foods Awards • Kids’ Cooking Classes • Local Plate competitions Plus it’s participated in NSW Regional Food Tours, Mudfest, and Go Grazing as well has created the Community Table, which gives small-scale growers a chance to share surplus produce casually. Whether you’re a seasoned artisan or just harvesting backyard herbs, the market provides a supportive, inspiring space to connect with customers. Market Days, Modern Offerings Held regularly at picturesque Robertson Park, the Farmers’ and Makers’ Markets now feature 30–50+ stalls depending on the event. You’ll find everything from: • Organic vegetables and pasture-raised eggs • Cow and goat cheese • Sourdough, bagels and tarts • Wines, cordials and low-alcohol drinks • Tapenades, pickles, jams and mustards • Flowers, plants and pet treats • Bacon & egg rolls, Asian bites, churros and more By welcoming multiple stallholders with similar products, the market fosters innovation and niche excellence. It’s a space where “the cream rises to the top.” A Legacy Worth Celebrating To mark their 20th anniversary, Mudgee Fine Foods is planning a special Founders’ Dinner - honouring the early committee, long-time stallholders and supporters. A Twilight Market under the stars, with music, food and family fun, is also in the works. “We want to celebrate not just where we’ve been, but the people who helped get us here.” Looking Forward: Fresh, Local, Loved As Mudgee Fine Foods steps into its next chapter, the vision remains clear: continue supporting local growers, educate future generations on sustainable eating, and offer a welcoming space for the community to connect - with each other and with the food on their plate. WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 21 WORDS ON WINE Sip Happens: How to pour wine into the hearts of the next generation? Excluding China, we are now exporting the lowest volume of wine in over 20 years. Along with reduced domestic consumption, wineries are now brimming with excess wine that has no home. My question is, while our industry has been intently focussed on a recent mission to “premiumise”, have we neglected our new and emerging consumers? Also, back in the 2010s, our winemaking attention was mostly diverted to satisfying the endless thirst of Chinese importers for replica “389” styled red wine. Then, suddenly in 2020 things changed - COVID followed by wine tariffs. And when we did look over our shoulder, changing drinking tastes and attitudes of the young had already passed us by. Gen Z would have become legal drinking age from 2015 onwards. They would be 28 now. Traditionally, that’s around the age where young drinkers transition into wine. Without enough engagement from the wine industry to this point, that switch may take a bit longer with the risk of losing the bulk of a generation to pre-mixed flavoured spirits (RTD’s). Millennials and Gen Z seem to want a more simple but authentic experience, less complex terminology and are more drawn to personal connections and values behind the brand such as sustainability, carbon footprints, and ethical practices. The positives are we have shed a lot of the traditional more formal wine culture that can be intimidating. And Australian winemakers are great product innovators when they need to 2024 Front Left Sangiovese Est. in 2024 by Nick Tinant, this ticks the boxes of authenticity, sustainability and drinkability. Small batch winemaking from young enthusiastic minds. Wild yeast, 12 days on skins and 35% whole bunch. Vibrant ruby red with lifted cherry-ripe, sylvanberry and sweet spice. The products and formats that will drive the next growth may not even exist on the shelves yet. I was taught by Philip Shaw at Rosemount early in my career that you should invest the most thought and effort into your mainstream wines. These are the wines that are going to be experienced by the majority of your followers and potential consumers. The most satisfying aspect of being a winemaker is seeing a non wine drinker taste your wine and enjoy it. There is nothing wrong with softening tannins and balancing acid with a lick of sugar if it means added approachability and an enjoyable introduction to wine for a new drinker. Below are two local wines made using the same variety in very different styles that will suit new and experienced wine lovers alike. Happy Drinking! 2023 First Ridge Sangiovese Frizzante Situated just south of Mudgee at 520m, the vine age of 25 years is entering prime time. 24 | Mid-Western Living WINTER 2025 For Raffay Rao, trading the pace of the city for the charm of Mudgee wasn’t just a career move - it was a lifestyle shift. Arriving in early 2023 as a Graduate Electrical Engineer at Wilpinjong Mine, Raff quickly immersed himself in a new way of life, one filled with early starts, sweeping landscapes, and a crash course in Aussie slang. Fast-forward to today, and he’s now an Electrical Reliability Engineer, keeping critical equipment running smoothly and pushing for smarter, more efficient systems underground and onsite. Wilpinjong Mine is located about 50km northeast of Mudgee and is owned and operated by Peabody, which has operated mines in Australia for over 60 years. The thermal coal mine is a major employer, supporting 570 local jobs, 200 specialist contractor roles and paying $96 million in wages to employees last year while operating as one of the region’s lowest-emission coal extractors. “The transition from graduate to engineer was made easy by the support and hands-on experience I got early on,” he says. “Now I’m solving more complex problems, and I love being able to see the real-world impact of my work.” But it’s not just the job that’s made Raffay’s time in the MidWestern region memorable. Life outside the mine has been equally transformative. Settling into a farm property just outside Mudgee, he’s embraced a quieter rhythm with starry skies, early sunrises, and the occasional unexpected encounter with local wildlife. “The peace and space out here is incredible. I’ve learned a lot about self-sustainability, and I’ve come to really appreciate the little things like how golden the light is at dawn, or how fresh the air smells after rain.” He’s also discovered that moving regional doesn’t mean hitting pause on career progression. At Wilpinjong, there’s structure, support, and a clear path forward. For someone with big ambitions, Raff says the Mid-Western move has only strengthened his resolve. “This is a place where you can build something both professionally and personally. You’re surrounded by good people, you’ve got room to grow, and the view’s not bad either.” From City Lights to Country Skies: Raff’s move to the Mid-Western region.

WINTER 2025 Mid-Western Living | 29 This year’s Fabulous Long Lunch in celebration of International Women’s Day was an intimate and uplifting event, hosted at the beautiful The Barn in Mudgee. With a relaxed pace, stunning surrounds and a thoughtfully curated experience, it was a heartfelt afternoon focused on connection, conversation and community. While the original plans included speakers travelling from Brisbane, Cyclone Alfred had other ideas. With flights grounded and weather unpredictable, the program was swiftly reimagined - and the result was something truly special. Guests enjoyed a long, lingering lunch paired with outstanding Burnbrae Wines, surrounded by thoughtful table settings and the warm company of local women from across the region. With plenty of time for conversation, the afternoon fostered a genuine sense of community and shared purpose. A standout moment was the “in conversation” session with Myff Clarke, Dubbo Electorate Woman of the Year 2024. Myff shared her story with humility and strength, reflecting on leadership, community engagement and the value of showing up - even when it’s hard. Also presenting on the day was Debbie O’Connor, founder of the TOTS Blanket Challenge - a grassroots initiative inviting volunteers to knit or crochet 20x20cm squares, later stitched into vibrant blankets for those in need. Her message of kindness, creativity and collective action resonated deeply with attendees. Despite the weather setbacks, the 2025 Fabulous Long Lunch proved that with heart and flexibility, something beautiful always emerges. It was a day that honoured women not just in words, but in presence - a celebration of what it means to gather, share and grow stronger together.
