SPRING 2025 Mid-Western Living | 13 MID-WESTERN MENTORING A transformative leadership journey for local business owners returns in 2026 – and it’s more powerful than ever. If you believe your business has more potential and you’re ready to take it to the next level the 2026 Mid-Western Mentoring Program might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. Founded by Pearl Daly-Swords, Managing Director of the Centre for Executive Development (CED), the program is a purpose-driven leadership initiative tailored for business owners across the Mid-Western Region. With over 20 years’ experience in HR and Learning & Development, Pearl is passionate about paying forward the guidance she’s received throughout her career. “I’ve had many incredible mentors over the years. I wanted to give local business owners the opportunity to experience effective mentorship and ongoing professional development,” Pearl shares. After a successful pilot in 2021 and a strong follow-up in 2022, the program took a short hiatus - but now it’s back, and applications for the 2026 intake are opening soon. What to Expect in 2026 The Mid-Western Mentoring Program runs from March to November and offers over 40 hours of tailored professional development. At its core is a one-on-one mentoring relationship – matching each participant (mentee) with a tenured business leader from the region. Participants also benefit from: • Monthly mentoring sessions (minimum 1 hour) • A business fundamentals series delivered by local experts on strategy, marketing, HR, finance, legal, tech and more • Executive Coaching sessions with Pearl Daly-Swords • Networking and collaboration opportunities • Fireside Chats with distinguished local business owners • Peer learning through Mentee Circles and Mentor Masterminds • A Graduation Ceremony to celebrate growth and achievement While the core elements are structured, the program is designed to flex around your business needs – making it a practical and valuable addition to your year. What Past Participants Are Saying Past mentees speak highly of the program’s blend of professional and personal development. Many shared that they built lasting friendships and support networks, while also stepping outside their comfort zones to grow as leaders. The structure and encouragement created a space where they could learn, network, and be inspired by other passionate business owners. Several noted that being in the same room as accomplished local mentors - who generously shared their experience and knowledge - was “priceless.” The confidence and clarity they gained continued long after the program concluded. Why Mentors Love Getting Involved Mentors, too, found the experience rewarding. Many described it as a meaningful way to give back to the local business community, while also connecting with other leaders in the region. Several commented on the energy, creativity and potential they witnessed during the mentor sessions, and the satisfaction of playing a small part in someone else’s business journey. It was, in their words, “a brilliant experience” and a reminder of the value of collaboration and shared wisdom. Get Involved If you’re ready to take your business further with guidance, inspiration and local support - now is the time to step up. ____ For more information or to express interest in the 2026 program, visit mwmentoring.com.au or contact Pearl directly via call or SMS 0419 237 619.
14 | Mid-Western Living SPRING 2025 Wilpinjong support strengthens regional art scene Some people think that mining and art are strange bedfellows, but Mudgee’s Michelle Steven doesn’t see it that way. Michelle recently won the Peabody Wilpinjong Prize for Hanging Art at Dunedoo’s Art Unlimited exhibition, and is grateful for the support the mining industry offers the arts in Mudgee region. For Michelle, and many other artists and creatives, Wilpinjong’s funding does more than provide funding support for prizes. It fuels an ecosystem where galleries, workshops and publications can thrive. “It’s lovely that our region has something like this,” she said. “Wilpinjong sponsors art, music, local businesses and fundraising events – it all adds to our creative little town.” Michelle arrived in Mudgee in 2012 and quickly wove herself into the town’s artistic fabric. “I went to TheMudFactory to meet like-minded people and ended up teaching after school art and creative workshops with the late Toni Behrens,” she recalls. “I also worked in the local art store with Toni and her husband. Now I run classes from my own studio and work on my own practice.” Trained in oil painting but now devoted to charcoal, Michelle builds still-life compositions that echo the region’s landscape and light. Year after year she entered Art Unlimited’s hanging art competition, buoyed by Wilpinjong’s promise of meaningful exposure. Last year she won, and then she won again this year. “You never quite expect to win. You just enter these things and hope for the best,” Michelle said, still astonished by her back-to-back victories. Each win came with a $3,000 cash prize and the honour of the win, that she proudly adds to her bio. She invested her winnings in much- appreciated supplies. Beyond the gallery walls, the mine’s backing helps keep art classes running, magazines free and regional talent in the spotlight. Now, with her workshops fully booked, Michelle is shifting her focus back to her own body of work. She’s preparing for a new exhibition, hopeful that continued support from Wilpinjong and the broader community will help bring her next charcoal series to life. SPRING 2025 Mid-Western Living | 15 SCULPTURES, LANDSCAPE & LEGACY Sculptures in the Garden returns to Mudgee this October - bigger and bolder than ever From 11–26 October 2025, the rolling hills of Mudgee will once again play host to one of regional Australia’s most anticipated art events - Sculptures in the Garden. Now in its 15th year, this beloved outdoor exhibition is set to return to Rosby Wines, where contemporary sculpture, creativity and community come together in one breathtaking location. What began as a local initiative has grown into regional NSW’s largest annual outdoor sculpture exhibition, attracting submissions from artists across the country. From emerging talents to acclaimed creatives, participants display their work across the expansive gardens and paddocks of the Rosby property - all set against the backdrop of vineyards, cellar doors and Mudgee’s unmistakable landscape. “Sculptures in the Garden has always been about celebrating art in the landscape,” says exhibition founder and Rosby coowner Kay Norton-Knight. “But in 2025, we’re setting our sights higher than ever before. We want more artists, more visitors and more unforgettable moments.” This year, the event is aiming for a record number of artist submissions, offering creatives the opportunity to exhibit alongside some of the country’s most respected names in sculpture - and to connect with thousands of visitors, collectors and curators who travel from near and far. Adding to the excitement, David Handley AM, founding CEO and Artistic Director of Sculpture by the Sea, returns as a special guest on the curatorial panel. His involvement affirms Sculptures in the Garden as a major platform for contemporary sculpture in regional Australia, and a highlight of the national arts calendar. More than just an exhibition, Sculptures in the Garden is a not-for-profit event with a strong community ethos. Each year, acquisition prizes fund the purchase of winning works, which are then installed throughout Mudgee and its surrounds as part of a growing legacy of public art. It’s this commitment to making art accessible - and permanent - that continues to set the event apart. With a focus on connection, creativity, and place, the 2025 edition promises to deliver something truly special - for artists, visitors, and the community alike. ____ Mark 11–26 October 2025 in your calendars. Mudgee’s landscape is about to come alive with sculpture once again. Visit sculpturesinthegarden.com.au for more info.
16 | Mid-Western Living SPRING 2025 What began as a humble hobby under the gum trees has become one of Mudgee’s most loved wine destinations. This year, Lazy Oak Wines raises a glass to ten years of passion, perseverance, and the kind of country hospitality that keeps people coming back - not just for the wine, but for the warmth. The past decade hasn’t been without its challenges. From drought and smoke taint to the pandemic and everything in between, Lazy Oak has stood strong - a small but mighty team anchored by heart, family, and a love for what they do. “We never planned this,” says Paula. “It started as a hobby, but it’s become our life. We live and breathe wine - and it’s all wrapped up in family.” From pop-up tastings at local markets to a full-blown cellar door, alfresco dining space and live music events, Lazy Oak has evolved significantly since that first pour. Yet they’ve held onto what matters: handcrafted wines, small-batch production, and an unshakeable connection to the land and their loyal community. A DECADE OF GRIT AND GRAPES Lazy Oak Wines Celebrates 10 Years of Winemaking, Community and Country Hospitality From Market Umbrellas to Milestone Moments The opening of the cellar door four years ago marked a turning point - transforming Lazy Oak from a quiet vineyard into a buzzing destination for wine lovers near and far. Today, the vineyard plays host to private tastings, long lunches, weddings and seasonal events that celebrate all the best things about life in the country. “We used to pop up an umbrella under the gum trees and pour tastings for passersby. Now we’ve got a full cellar door, live music, and a loyal community that celebrates right alongside us.” Despite the growth, Lazy Oak has never lost its charm. Guests still meet the owners, hear the stories behind the vines, and often leave with more than just a bottle - they leave feeling like part of the family. A Cellar Door Like No Other What makes Lazy Oak truly special isn’t just the wine - though their award-winning small-batch drops speak for themselves. It’s the atmosphere: relaxed, personal, and unmistakably authentic.

New spaces are also in development to further enhance the guest experience - all while keeping the atmosphere intimate, unrushed and rich with personality. “We’re not about huge crowds,” they explain. “We like things genuine and full of heart. And yes - there are whispers of wedding bells among the vines. With new experiences, community events and a lot of love in the air, Lazy Oak’s next decade promises to be as bold and beautiful as the last.” “We pride ourselves on good old-fashioned country hospitality,” they say. “There’s no rush here. Stay for a bit, stay for the day - and now, thanks to our partnership with HipCamp, you can even stay the night.” Guests can wake up among the vines, watch kangaroos at dawn, and enjoy a tasting experience that feels more like visiting old friends than attending a formal wine event. The team is hands-on in every way - from vine to bottle to barbecue - and that care is felt in every glass.

SPRING 2025 Mid-Western Living | 21 GOODBYE, COLOUR CASTLE. HELLO, NEW CHAPTER! For the past few years, Good Day Lifestyle Co. has been a bright and joyful staple on Perry Street - affectionately known by locals as the “colour castle.” But with their lease coming to an end, owner Emma Baker is stepping into an exciting new chapter. “I know it might feel like a goodbye, but it’s not,” says Emma. “We’re still here, just in a slightly different way for now.” While their beloved bricks-and-mortar store takes a pause, Good Day is moving online temporarily - with the same curation of fun, feel-good fashion, joyful homewares, gifts, and goodies for little ones. And for those nearby? They’ve secured the upstairs space at Loft (just across the road at 18 Perry Street) to manage the online side of the business - including local try-ons and free pickup, with dedicated hours to be shared soon. “We’ll also be keeping our free local delivery service running, so your favourites can come right to your door,” Emma says. This isn’t just a change in location - it’s a creative reset. Emma is excited to explore new offerings and ideas, with whispers of pop-ups, original product designs, and other surprises on the horizon. “Honestly, while it’s bittersweet, I feel so energised about what’s next. This move might just be the spark we need to dream even bigger.” And what keeps her going? “The people,” she smiles. “Helping someone find the perfect dress or the right gift - that connection is everything. That’s what Good Day is all about.” So keep your eyes on their socials, website, and upstairs at Loft - the next Good Day is just getting started. ___ @gooddaylifestyleco gooddaylifestyleco.com
22 | Mid-Western Living SPRING 2025 What started with a passion for Sicilian food has become one of the region’s most-loved dining destinations. At the heart of it is Santo - cooking the food he loves, in a town that’s welcomed him with open arms. Since opening just over a year ago, Santo’s has established itself as the place for hearty Italian fare, especially when catering to large groups. With a spacious dining area, it’s ideal for everything from family dinners to birthday celebrations - or simply a spontaneous midweek escape to Sicily, without leaving the Central West. The menu is a celebration of tradition, offering true Italian classics alongside rotating seasonal specials that keep locals coming back for more. Regular favourites like Mare e Monti (steak and prawn skewers with lemon pepper cream sauce) and Pesce e Gamberi (prawns and fish with asparagus, cherry tomatoes and a splash of white wine cream) bring a little ocean-to-plate indulgence to inland NSW. For something different, diners can explore the evolving Specials Menu, which changes every two to three weeks. Dishes have included everything from Agnella (Lamb Shanks) and Peperone Ripiene (Stuffed Capsicum) to Polpette (Meatballs) and rich Beef Ragu. Vegetarian options are always thoughtfully included, with delights like Arancini, Vegetarian Pasta, and Pasta al Gorgonzola. And of course, no Italian meal is complete without dolce. Every weekend during winter, Santo’s offers a selection of house-made desserts - think tiramisu and chocolate mousse - served with your favourite hot drink or after dinner tipple for the perfect end to your meal. Behind it all is Santo himself, doing what he loves best. “It’s not just about food,” he says, “It’s about bringing people together, sharing a little joy and creating a space where everyone feels welcome.” Pair your meal with a seasonal cocktail or winter-ready Affogato, and you’ve got yourself a true taste of Sicily in the heart of the Central West. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, one thing’s for sure - at Santo’s, you’ll arrive hungry and leave happy. ___ 0483 199 964 37 Ilford Rd, Kandos NSW 2848 SAVOURING SICILY IN KANDOS At Santo’s Pizza & Pasta, every dish is a love letter to authentic Italian cuisine.
SPRING 2025 Mid-Western Living | 23 Beyond the Cellar Door: How Local Venues and Young Talent Shape Our Wine Identity In a renowned wine region such as ours, the cellar door experience is iconic. It’s where the story of the soil and the season is told, one glass at a time. However, the narrative doesn’t end at the vineyard gates. The true ambassadors of our region’s diverse wine portfolio are often found in the bustling heart of our towns: the local restaurants, bars and pubs that act as the crucial final link between producer and consumer. These venues are the unofficial cellar doors of the main street and their impact on our wine culture shouldn’t be underestimated. A thoughtfully appointed wine list at the local does more than just offer drinks, it tells a story of the region’s viticultural landscape. While tourists may only have time to visit a handful of wineries, a well-designed list can present a snapshot of the entire area, showcasing everything such as a classic Mudgee Shiraz from one of the First Family’s of the region to an alternative variety from an up-and-coming boutique producer. My recent trip to Adelaide for the wine industry technical conference once again reinforced that commitment to quality and variety prevents regional stagnation. Central to this is the rise of knowledgeable and passionate young hospitality staff. No longer just order-takers, they are sommeliers-in-the-making, storytellers and educators. When a young employee can confidently articulate the difference between two Mudgee Rieslings or recommend a lesser-known Tempranillo to pair perfectly with a dish, they transform a simple meal into a memorable experience. 2024 TETO Lola’s Blend Cabernet Nero It is an unusual blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Nero d’Avola. Winemaker Tom Dunstan has cleverly used Cabernet for length and Nero for fruitiness/suppleness. It has an acid freshness with front/mid palate strength of dark ripe fruit, followed by soft tannins and gently handled (French) oak. Spice and berry complexity. This wine is a classic case of being greater than the sum of its parts. 14% | RRP $50 tetowines.com.au Winemaker Robert Black has been making wines under the BLACK label since 2013, and he continues to make wine from fruit grown in both the Mudgee and Orange regions. BLACK wines are available online and at Lawson Park Hotel, Oriental Hotel, Paragon Hotel, Woolpack Hotel, Kelly’s, Federal Hotel, Court House Hotel, Post Office Hotel Gulgong, Globe Hotel Rylstone, Kandos IGA and The Small Winemakers Centre SCAN FOR MORE INFO Their enthusiasm is critical in demystifying wine and making it more accessible. By investing in training and empowering their young staff, venues create a powerful sales force for the entire region. These informed recommendations build trust with consumers, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones. And at the same time fostering a deeper appreciation of the quality of local wines. Ultimately, the partnership between wineries and hospitality venues is a two-way street. Venues provide a platform for wineries to reach a broader audience, while a diverse, highquality wine list elevates the venue’s own reputation. This collaboration is well embedded in Adelaide along with a passion that hospitality can be a rewarding career for a new generation of young professionals. That positive nurturing will ensure that our region continues to be recognised not just for its grapes, but for the vibrant culture that surrounds them. 2017 Gilbert Methode Traditionelle First-rate fizz has three attributes: Complexity, balance and length. Simon and Will Gilbert have realised all three blending Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir with 63 months on lees. Chardonnay opens the fresh palate with length from the Pinot Noir crunch, Meunier filling out the middle. Complexity from the biscuity lees and impeccable balance thanks to zero dosage. 12.4% | RRP $66 gilbertfamilywines.com.au WORDS ON WINE by Robert Black BLACK SPRING PICKS:
