He firmly believes that selecting Merino sheep in line with a clear breeding objective is key to the genetic advancement and profitability of sheep enterprises. Animals need to suit the business model and environment, selected using a combination of subjective and objective measurements to move towards the breeding objective. Ben has previously managed large flocks of up to 80,000 DSE over multiple properties in NSW and has an extensive knowledge of all livestock grazing, cropping and dual-purpose systems. As the previous General Manager of the Yarrawonga Merino seedstock business, Ben was responsible for designing genetic advancement programs using a combination of new technology and visual appraisal. Through his role at Yarrawonga and with the guidance of a successful generational seedstock and commercial producer, Ben was also to access extensive and insightful knowledge on managing a sustainable and profitable business. Ben, alongside his wife Bec, now operate a mixed livestock farming business in TAS comprising of 45,000 DSE. He also services clients throughout NSW, providing sheep classing services and offering genetic and farm business management advice.
