4 MUSWELLBROOK Muswellbrook is located 90 minutes from Newcastle in the heart of the Upper Hunter, making it an ideal base from which to explore the region. Steeped in history, you’ll discover historic buildings, grand country homes and Jacaranda-lined streets. Muswellbrook is a powerhouse of new energy projects, mining and agriculture. The town has also developed a reputation for producing award-winning wine, olives, and delicious cheeses that can be enjoyed at local restaurants and at the farm gate. Every two years in September, Muswellbrook hosts the ‘The Great Cattle Dog Muster’. A celebration of the Australian Cattle Dog’s origins in the Upper Hunter, the event draws visitors from throughout the region, across Australia, and overseas. Muswellbrook also boasts the Upper Hunter’s Regional Arts Centre, home to the Max Waters Collection and the prestigious Muswellbrook Art Prize. ABERDEEN Located on the New England Highway, midway between Muswellbrook and Scone, Aberdeen was among the first settlements in the Upper Hunter. Established more than 180 years ago, Aberdeen is steeped in its Scottish heritage, taking its name from the Earl of Aberdeen, a friend of early settler and former British MP Thomas Macqueen. The annual ‘Aberdeen Highland Games’ are held each year on the first weekend in July and sees a colourful gathering of Scottish clans, pipe bands, highland dancers, heavylifting event competitors, as well as state and interstate tug-of-war teams come together to celebrate the Upper Hunter’s Scottish and Celtic history. Just a few kilometres east of Aberdeen, Lake Glenbawn is very popular for camping, boating, skiing and other water activities and boasts an abundance of fish, including Bass, Golden Perch, Murry Cod and Trout. MERRIWA Situated midway between Dubbo and Newcastle on the Golden Highway, Merriwa is favourite stopover for travellers heading to Mudgee, Dunedoo or Dubbo in the west, or to Willow Tree in the north. Settled in 1839, Merriwa is a flourishing agriculture centre that celebrates its rich agricultural history with the Merriwa Springtime Show in September and the Festival of the Fleeces on the June long weekend (don’t miss the ‘Running of the Sheep’ – resplendent in their red socks!). Built in the town centre in 1847, the Old Colonial Cottage houses the Merriwa Historical Society and Museum. CASSILIS West of Merriwa on the Golden Highway is the heritage-listed town of Cassilis. Settled in the 1830’s, Cassilis then covered a large area and was the base for the local police district and part of the Dalkeith Station. The township has plenty of country charm and is rich in agriculture. In September the region is covered by fields of Canola. DENMAN Nestled amid vineyards, horse studs, and olive groves, Denman is the Upper Hunter’s epicentre for local wine and produce. Delight your senses and sample some of Australia’s most award-winning wines – all grown and produced in the heart of the Upper Hunter. 8 The first Aberdeen Highland Games were held in the year 2000 on the 1st July – also National Tartan Day - and it has gone from strength to strength since. Highland Games Vice President Charles Cook OAM and the 2025 Honorary Chieftain said he can’t believe how big the event has become. “It’s been amazing, when we started there was virtually nothing to the event and it’s just built up over the years. We didn’t ever expect it to grow like this. I expected it to be a one off, but it has blossomed. People know about it, I don’t know how the words gets around but it certainly does!” Charles became a foundation member of the Scone RSL Pipes and Drums in 1996 that eventually led to the establishment of the Aberdeen Highland Games. He was recognised by the Committee in 2025 as the Honorary Chieftain, something else he never expected. “It wasn’t something I ever really sought. I have been organising the Chiefs for the last 25 years and I think the committee decided that I had perhaps overlooked myself,” he said with a smile. The event is only a day, and the organisers certainly pack the events in. From the Parade and Massed Band, band displays, Highland and Scottish Country Dancing, Australia’s Federation Guard and Kilted Warrior events including the Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss and Stones. There’s plenty of traditional food, you can purchase your own Upper Hunter Tartan merchandise and find out if you have Celtic roots. President of the Aberdeen Highland Games Nicola O’Driscoll has a long history with the event. Her father as the Honorary Chieftain in the early days and Nicola herself had the honour in 2019. “From a person who comes from a family that has been around since the early 1800s, I have Scottish blood and when you arrive at the Highland Games, even if you have just a drop of Celtic blood in you, it’s just so exciting. “It gives the town and the whole Upper Hunter region a boost too. That was part of the reason it started all those years ago in the first place, the abattoir closed as well so the town needed something to lift its spirits,” Nicola explained. “We would love to see even more families attend the event, children under 12 can come in the gates for free and we have events that the kids can get involved in. “The Highland Games are an easy event to get to, something you can tick off in a day, it’s flat and family friendly and it’s central to so many other things you can explore in the Upper Hunter.” The Aberdeen Highland Games are held on the first Saturday of July each year at Jefferson Park in Aberdeen. For tickets and details on the 2026 event head to: www.aberdeenhighlandgames.com Photo credits: Amanda Gaffney-Ray The Aberdeen Highland Games are a staple on the Upper Hunter events calendar. Held each year on the first Saturday in July as the frost falls on the grounds of Jefferson Park, the event celebrates the Celtic roots of the region and Scottish traditions that date back generations. 14 You might not notice it at first driving along the Golden Highway to Denman, but the climate is hotter, drier and cooler at night during summer and cold in winter making the Upper Hunter a wonderful wine growing region. WINERIES IN THE UPPER HUNTER ARE BUILT DIFFERENT Small Forest is one of the three main wineries in the Upper Hunter. Winemaker Atsuko Radcliffe is the only Japanese winemaker to establish a wine brand in Australia. She took the opportunity to settle near Denman in 2013 which is where you’ll find Small Forest on the corner of the Golden Highway and Denman Road. Small Forest is a direct translation of her Japanese family name Kobayashi, and the Wisteria is her family crest that you’ll find winding around the outdoor area of her cellar door. Atsuko is a one woman show producing three main varieties, Verdelho, Chardonnay and Shiraz. “This year I crushed 13 tonnes of grapes for the three varieties. “My Verdelho is quite different – it’s very fruity with more texture and structure. “Many people love my Chardonnay. Up until five or six years ago not many people wanted to taste it because they assumed they didn’t like it. I always at least got people to smell it though and funnily enough they ended up buying Chardonnay. “My wines are soft. The chardonnay is much less oak influenced and softer. Fruitiness is essential and the oak plays a supporting role n the background. “I make my Shiraz in small bins for many reasons. It reduces the risk in the process and makes the wine quite complex. Hunter reds aren’t hugely powerful, they’re quite gentle and soft.” The Upper Hunter’s weather plays a big role in Atsuko’s wine making process. “The weather is so dramatic and very different, so all my wines are single vineyard and reflect that season’s characteristics. I taste the fruit on the vine first which is crucial, I look at the canopy and the weather and what is happening and all of that plays a part in the final product.” When you walk into Atsuko’s cellar door you’ll also get a taste of Japanese culture. Atsuko learnt about Sake during her microbiology and chemistry studies with hands on sake making experience for 18 months in 2009-10. She also judges the Sake category at the International Wine Challenge in England each year and it’s a part of Japanese culture she wanted to share with the Upper Hunter. “Sake is a wonderful part of our culture and people don’t really know what it is.” So, when you head along the Golden Highway to Small Forest, not only can you try Sake and Atsuko’s beautiful wines, you can bring your dog along and explore the other wonderful wineries just a short drive away. “When people see or hear about Hunter Valley wineries, they often only think of what is found in the Lower Hunter, but there’s so much on offer further up the highway. “Part of the fun of finding new wine is coming to the cellar door. The three wineries in the Upper Hunter are totally different – us, Holllydeen and Two Rivers. Each vintage is different and we all try to make better wine each year so you must come and explore,” said Atsuko. “We offer a quality pot of tea or a cheese platter at our cellar door and if that isn’t enough you can drive to Denman or Muswellbrook – we have so much to offer in the Upper Hunter!” The Small Forrest Cellar Door is open Saturdays and Sundays all year round. Bookings are essential for Sake tastings. SMALL FOREST WINES
15 BURNING MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE Burning Mountain Nature Reserve contains a 6000-year-old, naturally occurring underground burning coal seam. Signposted with information panels, a guided walking track leads from the council car park through previously burnt areas to a viewing platform where the ever-burning coal seam and exhaust vents can be seen. The 4.5km return walk is located 20km north of Scone and takes around 90 minutes to complete. TOWARRI NATIONAL PARK Just a 20-minute drive from Scone, Towarri National Park and Wingen Maid Nature Reserve are a birdwatchers delight. Yellow-Tufted Honeyeaters, Kingfishers, and Glossy Black Cockatoos are just some of the species to be found. At the Washpools Camping and Picnic Areas on the bank of Middle Brook, travellers can cool off in the culturally significant water hole or hike over the Liverpool Range. As you drive to the park, look for the Wingen Maid protruding from the sandstone cliffs. GOULBURN RIVER NATIONAL PARK Goulburn River National Park is located west of Muswellbrook, south of Merriwa and east of Mudgee. The Goulburn River meanders between rugged sandstone cliffs honeycombed with caves, while wide sandy riverbanks offer easy walking trails. Kangaroos, wombats, emus, red-neck wallabies, turquoise parrots and wedge-tailed eagles are among the multitude of native wildlife you might see. There are also plenty of activities, including camping or picnicking at Spring Gully or Big River, and walking trails such as Lees Pinch Lookout. Walk along the Goulburn River and stand under The Drip on a hot day or check out the Aboriginal rock art at Hands on Rock. You can also take a dip in the swimming holes or bring your canoe for a paddle on the river. WOLLEMI NATIONAL PARK New South Wales’ largest wilderness area, Wollemi National Park is a spectacular maze of deep canyons, rocky cliffs, and undisturbed forest. Access Wollemi via Bulga and the Putty Road, or via Denman through Baerami. The park is home to a rich variety of species, including eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, gliders, geckos and snakes. View its breathtaking scenery of sandstone ridges and escarpments from the road along the Bylong Valley Way and the Widden Valley. Stop for a roadside break at the Phipps Cutting or Honeysuckle Creek picnic areas. Reconnect with nature. NATIONAL PARKS OF THE UPPER HUNTER
16 BARRINGTON TOPS NATIONAL PARK The World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park lies between Scone, Dungog and Gloucester. The Upper Hunter provides a western gateway into the park from Scone. Over 390 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects can be found in this wonderful wilderness area. Enjoy the scenic drive along Barrington Tops Forrest Road and stop off at any of the lookouts for fantastic views over the Hunter Valley. The Barrington Tops plateau has a host of facilities, including numerous picnic areas and short walks for day travellers. Camping facilities are available at Polblue, Devil’s Hole, Gummi Falls and Manning River. A range of longer hiking trails exist throughout the park and the majestic snow-covered ranges of the Barrington Tops are a must-see in winter. With a highest peak of 1586m above sea level, snow may be possible at any time of the year but is more likely to occur in the colder months of May and June. The best spots to experience the snow are at the higher elevations on the plateau, accessible by vehicle on the Barrington Tops Forest Road. The main access road is steep and unsealed and can become very slippery in ice or snow. 4WD vehicles with good tyres and high ground clearance are better suited to the hazardous conditions, however the road may be closed to all vehicles at short notice to ensure the safety of visitors. To increase your chances of finding settled snow on the ground, check with the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) weather forecast before you go or visit the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers page on Facebook for the latest updates. Weather conditions at Barrington Tops can change very quickly, so always be prepared. As a minimum take spare warm, dry clothing, blankets, food and water. Reconnect with nature. 20 Upper Hunter Tours has been operating in the region since the early 1990s, taking visitors from the coast to the valley around some of the most beautiful and world-class thoroughbred studs in the country. The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter dates back to the early days of settlement with the importation of a stallion to Segenhoe Stud in 1826. There are more than 150 thoroughbred studs in the region, each steeped in history, and up to 200 businesses. That concentration of studs makes the Upper Hunter the second largest in the world with Scone known as the “Horse Capital of Australia”. Craig Benjamin is the man behind Upper Hunter Tours and said his job is all about educating people. “My job is to educate people about the thoroughbred industry, not so much an individual horse or a stud. A picture tells a thousand words, and everyone loves it. “I love my it too, I love looking at the horses and talking to the people. A lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about what the industry is about and what it does, so I like to put all those little fires out. “The industry is wonderful, it’s a huge employer and they put a lot of money into the towns just like the mining industry does,” Craig said. “The industry is so important, not only to our local region but the entire country.” Some of the most prominent studs in the Upper Hunter include Arrowfield Stud, Coolmore, Darley, Widden Stud, Newgate and Vinery. You might have heard of Australia’s King of Sires Redoute’s Choice, a thoroughbred that exceeded expectations and whose home was at Arrowfield in Scone until he died in 2019. While Coolmore has been home to champion sires like Danehill and Encosta De Largo. Upper Hunter Tours offers half a dozen different tours of the region. The Special Thoroughbred Horse Stud Tour is a specially guided full day tour of the best studs the Upper Hunter has to offer. For this tour it’s up to you to decide which three studs you’d like to visit. There’s a tour to the beautiful Widden Valley, another to Scone that also includes the Hunter Warbirds Museum, Towari National Park and Hunterbelle or you can head to Denman or the beautiful Barrington Tops. Coaches are welcome too, and Craig said his tours give a nice overview of some of the best that the region has to offer. “Our coach groups like to have a mixture of everything – a stud, an olive grove, a local winery or pub. We try and make it as different as we can. “There’s always a lunch stop for our full day tours and there are some wonderful places to stop at each corner of the Upper Hunter we get to travel to.” Have you ever wondered what lies behind the ornate gates, wooden fences and fresh green grass of the Upper Hunter’s most prestigious thoroughbred horse studs? 28 The Hunter Warbirds Museum in Scone is a living centre of heritage aviation offering an experience that will excite, educate and inspire visitors of all ages. It will come to life on March 28 and 29, 2026 for the Warbirds Over Scone event, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The first Scone Airshow and Fair was held in 1984, the event championed by Colin Pay who founded Pays Air Service in Scone in 1964. Col was one of the founders of warbird restoration, building both a collection and a business around it. Colin died in 2007, but his son Ross has carried on his love of warbirds and aviation. He is now the part owner of Hunter Warbirds alongside world renowned aerobatic pilot Paul Bennet. Together they are creating the biggest collection of flying WWII aircraft in the southern hemisphere and Warbirds Over Scone will be the biggest airshow. “Taking into account just what is here at Hunter Warbirds makes it big, then you look at the number of Mustangs and Kittyhawks I’ll bring up and it will be the first time since the end of WWII that we have had more than three Spitfires fly at once in Australia; we could even have four of five of them. Add in all the aerobatic planes and it’ll be the biggest airshow by miles,” Paul explained. “Warbirds Over Scone will be over three days with a STEM Education Day for the kids on the Friday. We love promoting aviation and we want to promote it to the next generation of aviators. It’s great to get those young people involved. “We also want to honour the people who fought for our country who flew these cool machines before our time.” For the lovers of aviation, you’ll find the Supermarine Spitfire built in 1943 and saved from being scrapped and fully restored to airworthy condition, the Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk which was restored by Col Pay to flying condition, a recently restored de Havilland Vampire T-55 and many more. You can see them all on display in the Museum Monday to Sunday 9am to 4pm. “We have such a good variety of airplanes here now, we are basically the biggest collection of FLYING WWII aircraft in the southern hemisphere,” said Ross. “We have a bunch of P51 Mustangs, Kittyhawks, Hawker Sea Fury, Wirraway, the Harvard, the Vampire is recently flying and the only one flying in Australia. “We have a not-for-profit which is the Hunter Fighter Collection – it is dedicated to the collection, acquisition, restoration and display of historical and significant Australian built and operated aircraft. It’s made possible by our dedicated volunteers and financial support of our benefactors; it’s keeping our aviation history alive,” Ross smiled. Warbirds Over Scone will be held at: Scone Airport, Bunnan Road, Scone, NSW on Saturday March 28 and Sunday March 29, 2026. Gates will be open 9am to 5pm each day with flying displays approx. 10:30am to 4pm each day. 34 Albert Collison purchased two blocks of land on the Hunter River on either side of the Omadale Brook in June 1916. In 1931 he planted 1500 orange trees, 300 apple trees and tobacco plantations were already underway. By 1945 3000 trees were planted and at its peak close to 200 cases of apples would be going out of the apple shed each day during the season. Fast forward to 2026 and Roma Orchard is run by 6th generation Tilses’ Steve and Alison. There are 1000 apple trees for picking and three acres of wine grapes including Cabernet and Merlot. The Orchard has also been well known for many years for its refreshing Apple Truck Cider. Today Roma Orchard isn’t about trucking apples down the highway or just selling wine and cider, it’s about an experience. Steve and Alison took over in 1995 and gave the Orchard Lodge, that looks over rows of wine grapes and the iconic avenue of paulownia trees, a facelift. The lodge sleeps up to 33 people across 10 bedrooms each with air conditioning. There is a full kitchen, barbecue facilities, and a spacious living area including a games room as well as indoor and outdoor fireplaces. The Roma Cottage is one of the original homes on the property and has been renovated to sleep eight people across three bedrooms. If you prefer to sleep alongside the tranquil sound of the Omadale Brook and the Hunter River, camping is for you. Simply take the bridge over Omadale Brook and you’ll find the Roma Orchard Campground. There are basic toilet and shower facilities available as well as a camp kitchen with a barbecue and sink. “Why wouldn’t you want to come here,” said Steve with a wine in hand among the wine grapes. “You get to experience the real Australia from the moment you start your drive through the hills of the Upper Hunter. Whether the hills are green or brown it’s a sight to behold.” You feel like you’re part of the Tilse family when you speak to Steve and hear about the history of Roma Orchard. That family has certainly expanded over the years with families and groups of friends coming to stay at the Orchard every year. One group from Newcastle has been coming to stay for more than 20 years. “I love the family connection here and the history. Everyone becomes part of the family by the end of their stay, and I think that’s why people keep coming back. “There aren’t too many places where a big group of people can hang out around the campfire, have some alone time by the river, pick some apples or play a game of pool inside. There is something for everyone,” said Steve. Apple trees have been growing at Roma Orchard against the backdrop of the Barrington Tops National Park for six generations. Once upon a time an old red apple truck took thousands of boxes of apples over the Pages River to Sydney and now you can go and pick them yourself. For details on booking accommodation and your upcoming wedding at Roma Orchard head to: www.theorchardlodge.com.au You can pick apples during the season usually in March/April. Keep an eye on the Roma Orchard social media pages for information. ROMA ORCHARD WHERE THE OMADALE MEETS THE HUNTER Photo credits: CORAL HAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY
