Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service Limited ANNUAL REPORT 2024/2025 75 Funded by: Federal Dept of Social Services – National Indigenous Australians Agency NSW Health – Rural Doctors Network – Western NSW Primary Health Network Celebrating over 39 years of Service since 1986 PROPERTY REPORT ENDING JUNE 2025 Introduction This has been a huge year that culminates a five-year period of growth and strategic development of WAMS properties. Significant achievements over the past year include the award of property grants, the commencement (and completion) of construction projects, consideration of a significant property purchase (and a new leasing agreement), and WAMS developing its internal capacity to build new projects and implement maintenance programs. WALGETT Campus Walkway, Pitt and Wee Waa Streets At Pitt and Wee Waa Streets, a covered walkway that was first discussed in 2018 was completed in January 2025. The walkway links buildings with an accessible pathway that is shaded, sheltered, lit at night, and attractive. Euragai Goondi and the Community Garden Through 2025, the refurbishment of Euragai Goondi was significantly progressed, expanding the capacity of WAMS to run social and wellness programs away from the campus in a less clinical environment. Work included full roof replacement, a new commercial kitchen, new finishes throughout, upgrading of essential services, and general maintenance. By the end of June 2025, the project was close to completion. WAMS also completed the installation of sun shading at the adjacent community garden, increasing the potential for this site as a community garden both for social programs and food production. Wellbeing Hub, 22 Fox Street Late in 2024/25 WAMS explored purchasing 22 Fox Street on the main street of Walgett, to provide a further base to a range of wellness and social programs in a more central location. This site was explored as a drop-in centre, support craft-based and meal/cooking-based programs, and a men’s shed program. This project will further develop in the subsequent financial year. 23 Gilbert Street, Staff Accommodation In October 2024, WAMS was awarded this significant grant to fund four new modular units at 23 Gilbert Street, Walgett. These will replace an older house that was in poor condition and will increase the site capacity to now support four individuals (or family groups). The engagement of contractors to demolish the existing building on the site and construct the modular builder was progressed. These are due for delivery in September 2026. 13 Gilbert Street, Staff Accommodation Through 24/25, a new modular home at 13 Gilbert Street was fabricated (for delivery shortly into the following financial year). This would replace the uninhabitable sections of housing on the site to provide further accommodation for visiting staff in a universally accessible unit. Freedom Ride Memorial Park The past year has seen significant progress on the Freedom Ride Memorial Park site. A roof was built over the artwork and toilets were installed. In February 2025, a Blue Plaque marking the state significance of the site was installed, and unveiled, on the site by The Hon. Penny Sharpe MLC (NSW Minister for Planning) alongside Governor of NSW, Margaret Beazley and NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs The Hon. David Harris MP, at an event to mark 60th Anniversary of the Freedom Ride.
