Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service Limited ANNUAL REPORT 2024/2025 76 Funded by: Federal Dept of Social Services – National Indigenous Australians Agency NSW Health – Rural Doctors Network – Western NSW Primary Health Network Celebrating over 39 years of Service since 1986 BREWARRINA 5 -7 Sandon Street Since the Brewarrina service was auspiced to WAMS, the lack of clear ownership of the site has been a challenge, preventing effective maintenance and access to grant funding progressing. In 2022, BAHSL (the previous service entity) was deregistered by ASIC and the property reverted to Commonwealth ownership. The 24/25 year saw an application for the ownership to be handed over to WAMS. Church Street and Bridge Road Staff Housing This year also saw the completion of a series of grant-funded minor works upgrades to staff housing in Brewarrina which will better support visiting staff. Doyle Street In late 2024 the Clinic Development Application was submitted. It was rejected by Brewarrina Shire Council in early 2025, citing inadequate water pressure in the street for hydrants, inadequate parking for proposed use, and Council plans to create a tourism precinct in the area. Constructive Dialogue are responding to the items raised by Council on behalf of WAMS. The aim is to remove those contentions so that they are no longer legitimate reasons for Council to have rejected the application. Council also questioned the cultural fit of the AMS on that site and impact on the Baiame’s Ngunnhu (the Fish Traps), while local knowledge holder with whom WAMS have spoken have been supportive. Each reason is questionable and WAMS is determined to appeal the decision in the Land and Environment Court. GOODOOGA Over the past year WAMS has finalised a lease of a building in Doyle Street, Goodooga from Brewarrina Shire Council for establishment of the satellite clinic and planned maintenance work on the site (for completion and occupation in early 2026). PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT A huge achievement over the past year is strong development of WAMS property maintenance and management systems by Rebecca Gleeson and Matt Wilson. This has included asbestos audits (and management), fire compliance checks (and upgrades), air conditioning servicing, general maintenance work, grounds maintenance across Walgett, and the development of the projects listed above. This supported other remedial work at 13 Gilbert Street, grant-funded painting of staff accommodation at the Dundas Street units, and direct management of the Euragai Goondi works listed above. CONCLUSION Constructive Dialogue is extremely appreciative of the opportunities over the past year to support WAMS work. It has also been a period of time that has included greater involvement of the WAMS team leaders and WAMS management team in driving the direction of each project. The guidance of Chairperson Mary Purse and CEO Christine Corby AM has been critical to the success of projects. We also want to thank Mathew Baker, Rebecca Gleeson, Melissa Timmins and Leanne Beton for their ongoing support and contribution to the work. Looking forward to another big year in 2025/26 that will see the completion of the projects listed above. Nick Seemann Managing Director Constructive Dialogue Architects (CDA)
