Australia’s No.1 Boat Stands Port Coogee Marina has once again reaccredited as an International Clean Marina scoring 98.4%. Following an extensive audit, Port Coogee also achieved its inaugural Fish Friendly accreditation. Since accrediting as a Clean Marina in 2018, Port Coogee Marina has been taking part in a long-term biodiversity monitoring program with Aqua Research & Monitoring Services (ARMS). During a recent fish survey at the marina, marine scientists Glen Whisson and Alexandra Hoschke of ARMS observed unusual sightings of two fish species; Stott’s Goatfish (Upeneichthys stotti) normally found in deeper water and a juvenile Indo-Pacific Sergeant Major (Abudefduf vaigiensis) which is usually found further north. Marina Manager, Samantha Standish said, “a fish diversity study is conducted at the marina every three years, the City values the local environment and creating an environmentally aware, fish-friendly marina forms part of that philosophy.” In 2019 the marina installed the floating Seabin, designed to capture rubbish floating on the water’s surface, including many micro and macro plastics. The device has collected about 2.5kg of rubbish including cigarette butts, rope and fast-food packaging. “Other actions we take to encourage and support the existence of fish life in the marina include regular audits of boats in the marina, ensuring fishers use the designated fishing jetty only, and installing additional floating jetties to provide more structures for marine life,” said Standish.
