44 | WATERLINE April 2026 BUILDING SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE By Lily Peel, MIA Industry Training & Education Coordinator The Marina Training Institute (MTI) continues to expand its training and professional development opportunities in 2026, with new courses, strong enrolments, and ongoing industry engagement demonstrating the marina sector’s commitment to workforce development. A key focus is the launch of several new training programs to support strong career pathways. The Dockhand Course, launched in early 2026, is an entrylevel, hands-on program for those new to marinas. It covers basic marina operations, safety, environmental responsibilities, customer service, and dockside skills. Offered through an annual licence, it allows marinas to run the course for people in their local community, creating a practical pathway for onboarding new staff, attracting prospective employees, and introducing people to careers in the marina industry. The MIA will issue each participant with a Certificate of Completion. Also launching this year is the Dock Operations Course, a two-day professional development program aimed at those with one to three years’ experience in the marina industry. Designed to bridge the gap between the Dockhand Course and the Intermediate Marina Management Course, the program strengthens operational knowledge and leadership capability while exploring marina business functions and emergency preparedness. The inaugural course will be held in Pittwater on 23–24 June 2026. Following the success of the Straddle Carrier Operations and Maintenance Course, MTI has developed a Negative Forklift and Dry Stack Operations Course in collaboration with industry experts. This program focuses specifically on the safe operation of negative forklifts within dry stack facilities. Participants must already hold a forklift licence and have some operational experience. The course aims to support dry stack operators in reducing risk, improving operational standards, and strengthening workplace health and safety outcomes. Participation in MTI’s online learning programs also continues to grow. Many facilities are taking advantage of the five online course induction bundle, available for $800 + GST, which provides a comprehensive introduction to the marina industry and complements workplace induction programs. The Institute’s flagship management programs remain highly sought after. The Intermediate Marina Management Course, to be held at Fremantle Sailing Club from 26–30 July 2026, is already fully booked with 30 participants from across Australia, New Zealand, and the Asia-Pacific region. The Advanced Marina Management Course, hosted at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron from 30 August to 4 September, is also nearing capacity. Complementing these programs is MTI’s 2026 webinar series, covering topics such as bird management, marina legal issues, insurance, and human resources. These sessions remain free to MIA members and provide accessible ongoing professional development for the industry. Together, these initiatives highlight the continued investment in training and education as the marina industry supports the next generation of marina managers, operators, and professionals.
