45 WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? And so we come to the haunting Isaiah text that the eunuch is reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.” The eunuch is reading about a man who suffered terribly, in silence. A man who was humiliated and denied justice. A man without descendants. In other words, a man just like a eunuch. Eunuchs were castrated without their consent, humiliated, with no hope of descendants. The Ethiopian eunuch identifies deeply with the suffering man described in Isaiah. This raises his curiosity: who was Isaiah talking about? He asks: “About whom, may I ask, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Who could this person be with whom I identify? Surely not a god, surely no one worships a humiliated god?
