34 | WATERLINE July 2026 RESEARCH THE 2025 HEALTH OF THE AUSTRALIAN MARINA INDUSTRY KEY FINDINGS The Marina Industries Association’s (MIA) 2025 Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey (HAMIS) concluded late 2025 and the report indicates that Australia's marina industry is in robust shape. The key findings were presented at the Marinas26 International Conference & Trade Exhibition on Queensland’s Gold Coast late last month. The survey is widely considered as the most comprehensive marina research project of its kind anywhere in the world. Now in its eighth iteration, the survey was once again conducted by the MIA’s research partners at Michigan State University, with MIA Silver Sponsor, International Marina Consultants helping fund the project. This year's results are particularly significant: an outstanding 40% of Australian marinas completed the survey, a participation rate that would be the envy of any industry research project and one that ensures the data is both reliable and statistically consistent. A $3.2 BILLION INDUSTRY Across 305 marinas, the Australian marina sector makes an impressive economic footprint. The industry contributes an estimated $3.2 billion to the economy and supports nearly 24,000 jobs — including 2,737 direct marina employees, 11,277 contractor positions, and an estimated 9,898 tenant employee roles. Total gross revenues across the sector reached $965 million, with $171 million paid in wages and $115 million invested in capital expenditure. THE AVERAGE MARINA The numbers behind a typical Australian marina tell a story of active, well-utilised assets. The average marina generates $3.2 million in revenue, maintains an occupancy rate of 85.4%, employs 10 staff, and engages around 40 contractors. It hosts eight small business tenants, offers 188 vessel storage spaces, pays $491,000 in tax, and invests $538,000 in capital works annually. In terms of facilities, 80% of marinas provide potable water, 67% offer metered electricity, and 61% rent space to business tenants. Around half provide food and beverage offerings, boat maintenance services, or black water pump-out facilities, while 42% supply fuel. 2025 HEALTH OF THE MARINE INDUSTRY REPORT Industry Performance Overview 305 Marinas Average Turnover Average Occupancy $3.2M 85.4% 24,000 Jobs Supported^ $3.2B Economic Contribution* Small Business Premises 1,141 ECONOMIC & SOCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS $3.2B Economic Contribution* 23,915 2,737 Marina Direct 11,277 Contractors 9,898 Est Tenant Employees^ Supported Jobs^ Small Business Tenancies 1,141 11,277 Engage Contractors Tax Contributions $129M $965M Total Gross Revenues $171M Total Wages $115M Total CapEx Investments INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE Average Turnover Average Occupancy $3.2M 85.4% Small Business Premises 1,141 ECONOMIC & SOCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS $3.2B Economic Contribution* 23,915 2,737 Marina Direct 11,277 Contractors 9,898 Est Tenant Employees^ Supported Jobs^ Small Business Tenancies 1,141 11,277 Engage Contractors Tax Contributions $129M $965M Total Gross Revenues $171M Total Wages $115M Total CapEx Investments INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE 2025 HEALTH OF THE MARINE INDUSTRY REPORT Industry Performance Overview 305 Marinas Average Turnover Average Occupancy $3.2M 85.4% 24,000 Jobs Supported^ $3.2B Economic Contribution* Small Business Premises 1,141 ECONOMIC & SOCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS $3.2B Economic Contribution* 23,915 2,737 Marina Direct 11,277 Contractors 9,898 Est Tenant Employees^ Supported Jobs^ Small Business Tenancies 1,141 11,277 Engage Contractors Tax Contributions $129M $965M Total Gross Revenues $171M Total Wages $115M Total CapEx Investments INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE Average Turnover Average Occupancy $3.2M 85.4% Small Business Premises 1,141 ECONOMIC & SOCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS Economic Contribution* 2,737 Marina Direct 11,277 Contractors 9,898 Est Tenant Employees^ Supported Jobs^ Small Business Tenancies 1,141 11,277 Engage Contractors Tax Contributions $965M Total Gross Revenues $171M Total Wages $115M Total CapEx Investments INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE
