The next decade: measuring up globally

For the first time at an ASFA Conference, we will have not one but two opening speakers. As day one

of the Conference coincides with the announcement of the new American President, global politics will

be on everyone’s mind. With the geopolitical landscape in a state of flux, our speakers will examine the

opportunities, challenges and potential conflicts that lie ahead.

The future of international politics and economy

Dr Friedman will explore the current economic climate within a historical context. The period between

1991 and 2008 was a unique time. The old normal has now returned. It is a period where economic

stresses create geopolitical stresses and geopolitics redefines economics. The Eurasian landmass is

undergoing intensifying conflict and internal crises. Europe, Russia, the Middle East and China are

all in this condition. The trigger was the 2008 economic crisis, and a resulting export crisis that is still

unfolding. Dr Friedman will discuss this with a particular emphasis on the results of the US election.

Dr George Friedman

Chair, ASFA QLD State Executive (Australia)

Australia: where to from here?

In the context of the US election and current political environment, driving economic reform will be

a challenge for Australian governments. Providing economic leadership in today’s world means re-

envisioning old economic models to discover new ones. John Howard will candidly discuss his vision for

Australia’s economic and political future, and in particular the increasingly important role of business,

including the superannuation industry, in this changing world. Howard will examine what we need to do

to measure up on the world stage and detail steps for handling the growing concerns of globalisation

and threats to economic stability.

Hon. John Howard OM AC

Former Prime Minister of Australia (Australia)
