Interview

8 iNarrabri Magazine

March 25th - April 8th

No doubt all will be in readiness

for this year’s big event. What

can the race-goers expect?

With about a fortnight to go, the

grounds are currently being pre-

pared and everything is looking

very green at the moment.

This years event will have Heidi

Gleeson’s face painting, portable

photo booth for anyone wanting

race day photos, a yummy can-

teen with the Narrabri Harness

Club, soft drink and snack stall

with Narrabri Dirt Bike Club, the

very popular Fashions in the Field

competitions with great prizes, in-

terstate and local bookmakers and

tote, and of course a day of enjoy-

ing friends’ company at Narrabri’s

social event of the year.

When do you start organising

the races and what is involved?

The Narrabri Jockey Club com-

mittee work on the grounds all

through the year... there are the

grounds to maintain, the race track

and amenities blocks... and lots of

mowing and whipper snippering.

We also set up the broadcasting

of the races, various stalls and the

swab box.

How many people on your com-

mittee and what are their re-

sponsibilities?

We have a small committee of

around 8 people and each person

has their area of responsibility.

Paul Redding and Rod Stevens are

in charge of preparing the race-

track, checking starting barriers,

organising barrier attendants and

Clerk of the course for race-day.

Heather and Allison Osborne are

our Fashions in the Field organis-

ers, coordinating and collecting

prizes and running the event on

race-day.

Bob Percival is our electronics man

who sets up the broadcasting sys-

tems and televisions through SKY

Racing and makes sure they run

smoothly on the day.

Graham Richardson organises the

stock for the bar as well as security

I organise the races in conjunction

with Racing NSW and the stew-

ards at Tamworth. My responsibili-

ties include the race caller, farrier,

ambulance, SKY Racing, race-day

programme, advertising, sponsor-

ship, marquees, gate staff (provid-

ed by the VRA), bookmakers and

Club’s Liquor License and making

sure that the day runs incident free

for people and horses.

The week leading into race-day

we have a lot of people who come

along and give us a hand to make

sure that everything is in place

which is very much appreciated by
