a big part in the event’s success.
How does an owner / trainer get
his / her horse into a race?
Trainers have to nominate their
horse for the race on the Mon-
day prior to race-day. The jockeys
weight for the horse is set on the
Wednesday. If the owner/trainer is
happy with the weight then they
accept with Racing NSW on the
Thursday and then nominate their
jockey and get their barrier draw
on the Friday ready to race on the
Saturday.
There are always many people
dressed to the hilt –what catego-
ries do we have in the ‘fashion
stakes’ and what do you believe
the judges are looking for?
Fashions in the Field is a very
popular event with categories for
boys and girls, men and women,
as well as couples. It is a pleasure
to see so many people dressed up
and it brings a very enjoyable at-
mosphere to the day. We have a
race-day criteria for our judges to
follow, to give guidelines on fash-
ionable race attire... hats, bags,
gloves etc.
How long has this race meeting
been going and why only one
event each year?
The Narrabri Jockey Club has
been racing in the Narrabri Shire
for close on 150 years, which is an
enormous time for any club. We
race under the rules and regula-
tions of Racing NSW.
We now only race once a year as
race dates have to be allocated to
all of NSW and we would prefer to
have one very enjoyable social day
for the community.
Local businesses seem to be get-
ting more involved – how does
this help?
Sponsorship and local businesses
are very important to any organi-
sation holding an event and we
like to involve other clubs so they
can make it a fund raising oppor-
tunity.
Local businesses are also well sup-
ported by the community lead-
ing up to race-day with increased
sales. Not only the fashion houses,
but also hairdressers, cabs, ac-
commodation providers and of
course the after race functions are
very popular across town.
Where do profits from the meet-
ing generally go?
The profits from our race meeting
go towards organising next year’s
meeting and the facilities at the
racecourse. We hold a committee
meeting after the race-day and
then work out improvements that
can be made for the next year.
What is the best way the mug
punter can pick the winner of
the cup?
Punters will need to read the form
of a horse in the race book... some
like to follow a certain jockey, some
like the colours of the jockey’s silks,
some just like the name of a horse.
To be honest, the committee are
so busy on the day we do not even
have a bet and don’t get to see all
the races.
