How did you get started in show
business?
Mark:
From an early age, I started
playing in various bands in the
Eighties, one of which, Green Socks,
played on Hey Hey, It's Saturday.
Joanne:
When I was fifteen I started
singing and playing guitar in my
church band. I was also in a Rocka-
billy Band and from an early age
was entering myself into musical
contests. I also mimicked Marilyn... I
had the hair and everything
How long have you been per-
forming?
Mark:
About 35 years. Joanne and I
have been performing together for
the past eight years.
Joanne:
I have been performing for
around 15 years now.
How did you two meet?
Joanne:
Because I was a massive
Elvis fan from a very early age I
went to one of Mark's shows and
this is where I first met him. We
started hanging out and not long
after got together. This was about
ten years ago.
Where has the show taken you?
Mark:
Together we have travelled all
around Australia. I have performed
Elvis shows in Japan, America &
New Zealand.
How do you describe the show?
Mark:
An interactive audience expe-
rience that is a lot of fun!
Why Cash, Monroe and Presley?
Joanne:
I was into Johnny Cash and
the Carter family when I was young.
I took Mark to see the Johnny Cash
film and thought that Mark could
pull it off. He has the look and act-
ing ability to portray Cash on stage,
a very confronting character, both
musically and visually.
Marilyn is such a fun character to
do... It's almost like a comedy... the
men go crazy and the wives are
laughing. It works so well with the
show, it makes people happy... She
is such an iconic figure!
Mark:
I grew up listening to Elvis,
from the age of nine. I loved Elvis
before I met my vocal coach, who
took me to see an Elvis tribute
where the idea of my own tribute
hatched. I could relate to Elvis,
not just because of his voice, but
because of his personailty, his
fondness for his mum... and various
character traits that I have a lot of
affinity for.
What do you enjoy most about
performing this show?
Mark:
I get personal staisfaction out
of making people happy. There is no
greater satisfaction than to entertain
and help people have a good time,
laugh and enjoy themselves.
Joanne:
Exactly what Mark said. But
it is also therapeutic for us person-
ally, to see the audience light up as
a result of our performance.
What has been your most memo-
rable performance and why?
Mark:
We played at Twin Towns
(Gold Coast) last year to a sell out
audience of 1200 people. We had
the privilege of performing on the
same stage that Johnny Cash had
graced back in 1985.
Joanne:
We performed in a remote
indigenous community in Arnhem
Land, Northern Territory, completely
cut off from everywhere else, where
we were invited as special guests by
the community's Elders. At the start
of the show it was kind of like they
didn't know who we were, but by
the end, everyone was going off. It
was a real privilege just to be there.
Any funny moments on stage?
Joanne:
With Marilyn, I have tried to
be sexy and then knock over some-
one's beer... or on occasion I will trip
over the fan...
Apart from the Narrabri Golf Club,
where will this tour take you?
Mark:
We're playing around twenty
venues travelling from Melbourne
up to the Gold Coast and back.
Narrabri will be on the way up.
Have you performed in Narrabri
before and what are your expecta-
tions?
Mark:
We expect to satisfy our audi-
ence. Of course we hope to get as
many people there as we can, but
the main thing is that those that
are there, have a great time. That is
what we are about.
