France

On Christmas Eve, French children leave out

shoes for Pere Noel to put presents in. Their

main Christmas meal is called ‘le reveillon’

and is eaten on Christmas Eve after a midnight

church service. A Yule log cake is a traditional

dessert and one of many treats enjoyed.

Greece

St Basil brings gifts to Greek children at New

Year. Special Christmas bread is twisted into

animal shapes and nailed to the walls of houses

for a whole year. The main Christmas meal is

eaten after an early morning church service on

Christmas day. Kallikantzeri are mischievous

goblins who appear during the 12 days of

Christmas and children leave cakes or biscuits

out for them.

Spain

Papa Noel delivers presents after Christmas

dinner and a midnight church service.

Children also receive gifts from the Three Wise

men on 6th January. A special dance called

the ‘jota’ is performed and people dance to

music made by guitars and castanets.

Denmark

Children are visited by Julemanden and

his Juul Nisse elves to bring gifts. The Christmas

feast is eaten at midnight on Christmas Eve. A

special rice pudding dessert is eaten at the end,

containing a hidden almond. Whoever finds the

almond will have good luck all year.

Italy

Presents are delivered by a kind witch called

Befana, who arrives on a broomstick! A special

meal of Panetone ( a spiced bread) and

chocolate is eaten after a midnight church

service on Christmas Eve. Children go carol

singing eight days before Christmas.

China

People who celebrate Christmas decorate their

houses with paper lanterns. Children hang

stockings for Dun Che Lao Ren who comes

calling on Christmas Eve. Paper chains, lanterns

and flowers are hung on Christmas trees.

Venezuela

People often eat hallacas (dumplings filled with

meat and vegetables) for their Christmas meal.

Nativity scenes are commonplace and presents

are brought on Christmas Day by the Baby

Jesus, who places them around the Nativity

scene or under the Christmas tree.

Malta

Children in Malta get their presents from Santa

Claus on Christmas night. Today the traditional

Maltese menu has made way for Christmas

turkey, Christmas cakes, Christmas puddings

and mince pies, all inherited during 164 years

of British rule (1800 - 1964) in Malta. Italian

Panetone has also become a Christmas

favourite.

USA

People in America like to decorate the outsides

of their houses with lights and sometimes even

statues of Santa Claus, snowmen and reindeer.

In Hawaii Santa is called Kanakaloka! The

traditional meal for American families is turkey

or ham with cranberry sauce, although Polish

sausage or a lasagne may be served.
