Mettams magicWe dive beneath the surface of Mettams Pool, a much-loved Sunset Coast favourite, to uncover a story that goes far deeper than its crystal-clear waters. Ancient Coastal Ties For thousands of years, our coastline (Mooro Noongar Boodjar) was part of the lived landscape of the Whadjuk Noongar people. Our local wetlands and coastline were vital seasonal places for gathering, food and cultural life. A Living Coastal Legacy Originally known as Lennard’s Pool, Mettams Pool was renamed in honour of local World War I veteran Frank Mettam, whose determination helped create the sheltered lagoon and protected swimming area we know and love today. From the 1930s through to the 1960s, Mettam painstakingly chipped away at the limestone reef using a crowbar and occasionally, explosives, transforming the rugged coastline into a safer place for the community to swim. What began as one man’s vision became an intergenerational effort, with his children and grandchildren joining in to expand the pool and shape this much-loved coastal icon. While the hands-on, DIY approach used in earlier years probably wouldn’t align with today’s marine conservation standards, Frank Mettam’s legacy lives on in the resilient reef and thriving underwater sanctuary that continues to be enjoyed by the community today. Where the Reef Comes Alive Often described as a natural aquarium, Mettams Pool offers snorkelling for all experience levels. The sheltered lagoon is ideal for beginners, with calm conditions and marine life visible just metres from shore — from red-lip morwong, banded sweep and wrasse to schools of buffalo bream, sea mullet, tarwhine and blowfish. Look closely among the rocks and you’ll spot anemones, cushion stars, abalone and octopus expertly camouflaged against the limestone. For more experienced snorkellers, the adventure continues beyond the drop-off. The outer reef reveals hidden caves, swim-throughs and open water where sand whiting and Australian herring glide past in shimmering groups. Conditions here can be more energetic, with stronger surge, making it a place best explored with experience. Throughout the generations, this much-loved pool continues to surprise - offering both calm and adventure in one remarkable stretch of coast.

KURE - SWEAT, WET & RESET INFRARED SAUNA AND ICEBATH Tucked away in Watermans Bay, KURE is a calming, neighbourhood sauna and ice bath with down-south coastal vibes (minus the long drive!) We chatted with owner Lou about creating a no-fluff, no-pressure space to sweat, reset and just be. Tells us, what inspired KURE? KURE came from a pretty heavy chapter in our lives - definitely not a wellness bandwagon moment! 3 years ago my husband had spinal surgery and everything slowed down fast. Sauna and ice therapy became part of healing, starting in our own bathroom (with bags of ice from the local servo!) and it quickly became about more than the physical - it was the mental reset that really stuck. I was already running my own business in the mental health space, and it felt like it aligned with what I was doing - and with a spare patch of garden at our place, we decided to turn something that helped us, into something others could benefit from too. What can customers expect from a visit? People can expect space - physically, mentally, emotionally. If you’re a first-timer, you’ll get a quick, relaxed walk-through from me (Lou), and then the space is yours. No hovering. No pressure. And if you need anything? Talk us through the ‘vibe’ you’ve created at KURE It’s calm, private, and intentionally low-key. KURE is run from our family home, and we’re really upfront about that. While the space itself is private, calm, and thoughtfully designed, you might occasionally hear the soundtrack of real life! Kids, laughter, movement, and the general chaos that comes with being human. Most people actually love this part. It reminds them that KURE wasn’t built by a corporation or a glossy wellness concept. It was built by real people, for real people - especially those carrying more than they realise. Do you have any advice for first-time visitors or those hesitant to try hot/cold therapy? The first thing I always say is this: you don’t need to be brave, tough, or good at this. If you’re new - listen to your body. Short sauna sessions. A gentle cold dip. Plenty of breaks. The goal isn’t to endure the experience. The goal is to leave feeling better than when you arrived - calmer, clearer, and more regulated. Images: De We loved being part of the inaugural Flora Festival - an initiative developed by the Flora Terrace Precinct community. Flora Terrace came to life with a relaxed, coastal celebration of everything local. From great food and drinks to live entertainment, artisans, makers and small businesses, the festival created a space for the community to come together and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that makes this precinct feel like home. We spent the day chatting with festivalgoers at the information tent, handing out free water and sunscreen to keep everyone cool, sun-safe and soaking up those coastal festival vibes.
