Burning Palms

25 Burning Palms Surf Life Saving Club Inc. – 86th Annual Report – 2024-2025 Season CLUB AWARDS Dr Dorothy Butt First Aid Award This is the first year for this trophy kindly donated by the Butt Family for First Aid treatment at Burning Palms, on patrol or in the Community. Dr Dorothy Butt was a passionate person for treating people at Burning Palms for over 50 years, having a cabin she was easy to access for a broken bone to heart issues and other injuries. Dorothy played an important part in the Community and Surf Club members with no mobile phones, or helicopters, those were the days where we had to carry out people or use a 2 Way Radio in the Boat House to call VJ2SA Angler Base Wollongong who would contact and arrange police or ambulance to the Garawarra Farm as we would set off up the track with the patient on a stretcher to meet them after Dorothy had patched them up. Each Patrol was to put forward a patrol member to the Club Captain and presented all nominees to the Committee for a final decision. The inaugural winner is Kyoko Cooper – Patrol 4 who is enjoying being in a patrol as an Award member. She has demonstrated a passion for First Aid, cleaning and re-stocking the First Aid Kits, also Defib Kits to make sure they are ready for patrols. Congratulations Kyoko on your achievements in First Aid this season, you are passionate about it, well done. Unsung Hero Award Jocelyn and Peter Jones have been Associate Members for many years. They are associated with the family shack. Allan Butt’s daughter Jocelyn with her sisters grew up at Burning Palms so she has a life of history to tell. Both are in the Rural Fire Service and dedicate many hours. Last year they asked if they could assist with the fire fighting equipment which had not been serviced for some time. We immediately jumped at the offer and off they went, checking all and found many problems – pumps were serviced and back packs and hoses were checked with now having two locations, the top shed and the bottom cabinet. After doing all this both turned their hands to show all how to use the equipment with a crowd of around 25. They will now check all on a yearly basis and arrange more training days in the coming season. Thanks Jocelyn and Peter, you are truly Unsung Heroes.
