The Sin of Immodesty As for whether or not the way you dressed that night was a mortal sin, let me first say a few words about what mortal sin is. To commit a mortal sin is to lose God’s grace, to fall into a state of enmity with God; it is to be dead spiritually. To die in that state is to be condemned to eternal hellfire, for there is no conversion possible after death. St Paul’s words are clear: Know you not, that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? But if any man violate the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which you are (1 Cor 3:16-17). I therefore commend you on not wanting to commit a mortal sin. However, even though it is good that you do not want to commit a mortal sin, it would be better if you wanted to avoid sin altogether. To ask the question as ‘Know you not, that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?’ 1 Cor 3:16 48
