4 | Mid-Western Living SPRING 2024 DISINFLUENCERS In the heart of Mudgee, a remarkable photoshoot took place that not only highlighted the natural beauty of the region but also celebrated the importance of inclusivity. Spearheaded by Disinfluencer, the world’s first inclusive talent hub, the photoshoot brought together local families and individuals to showcase the strength and vibrancy of those often overlooked by mainstream media. Disinfluencer was founded by Simone Eyles, a passionate advocate for disability representation. After experiencing the challenges of raising a child with a disability and witnessing the lack of positive portrayal in the media, Simone decided to create a platform that would change the narrative. Through Disinfluencer, she aims to bridge the gap between talent with disabilities and the advertising industry, offering a space where diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated. MEET THE OF MUDGEE LEFT: Maddison with her mum Joanne and sister Hannah RIGHT: Kalarny with his dad Aaron, mum Lyreka and little sister Daisy. Photos by Amber Hooper The recent Mudgee photoshoot was a testament to this vision. It was a day filled with laughter, empowerment, and the undeniable joy of seeing individuals shine in front of the camera. For some, like Maddison, this experience was transformative. Her mother, Joanne, watched as her usually shy daughter slowly opened up, blossoming under the patient guidance of the photographer, Amber Hooper, and Simone. Joanne shared how the experience gave Maddison a muchneeded confidence boost, “I was so proud to see Maddison in front of the camera. She isn’t comfortable being in the spotlight, especially in front large groups. I hope that having this experience will help build her confidence to see herself as the beautiful, strong girl she is.” For others, like Kalarny, the day was all about fun and freedom. Zipping around in his wheelchair, he reveled in the attention and enjoyed making funny faces for the camera. His mother, Lyreka, emphasised how important it is for regional areas to be recognised as inclusive and welcoming to those with disabilities. She hopes this will inspire others to see the possibilities for everyone, regardless of if they have wheels or not! Shining a Light on Inclusivity: Mudgee’s Disinfluencers Show the Power of Being Seen
SPRING 2024 Mid-Western Living | 5 I hope that our community will become more understanding of the challengers faced by those with hidden disabilities. - Joanne “ Simone Eyles, founder of disinfluencer with her son Josh. Photo by Jackie of Hearts Studio Mark with his wife Dimity and their girls Deyanirrah, Zaharrah, Addyson and Kaylynn. Photo by Amber Hooper. Mark and his daughters had a similarly uplifting experience. Watching his girls run around in their dresses, capturing natural, candid moments, Mark felt proud to be part of something that promotes the idea that there is no such thing as “normal.” He believes that by spreading awareness and showcasing the diversity of experiences, the community can become more supportive and understanding. The impact of this photoshoot extends beyond the pages of Mid-Western Living Magazine. By featuring these stories and images, Disinfluencer is challenging outdated perceptions of disability and encouraging a more inclusive approach in media and marketing. The goal is not just to represent people with disabilities but to celebrate their uniqueness and the richness they bring to the world. Disinfluencer is not just a platform; it’s a movement. With its holistic approach, offering everything from a comprehensive library of stock photos to educational modules for businesses, Disinfluencer is paving the way for a future where disability is mainstreamed in all facets of life. As more brands recognise the value of inclusivity, the demand for Disinfluencer is set to grow, and the impact will be profound. In a world where approximately 1.85 billion people live with a disability, representing this demographic in media and advertising is not just ethical—it’s essential. The Mudgee photoshoot is a small but powerful example of how inclusion can be both beautiful and impactful. As the participants of the shoot can attest, being a “Disinfluencer of Mudgee” is not just about being seen; it’s about being valued, respected, and celebrated for who you are. With more events like these planned, Disinfluencer continues to lead the charge in changing the way the world views disability. Whether it’s through groundbreaking campaigns, like those they’ve done for Birdsnest and Visit Canberra, or intimate, local photoshoots in towns like Mudgee, the message remains clear: diversity is our strength, and every individual has the right to be seen in all their brilliance. Brands and Businesses: Disinfluencer provides a unique blend of resources designed to empower your brand, business, and marketing teams. With access to stunning, authentic photos, expertise in digital accessibility, and training in inclusive marketing practices, your team will be better equipped to connect with diverse audiences and create meaningful, inclusive content. SPRING 2024 Mid-Western Living | 7 When Elise Rafferty, a seasoned professional in industrial property development, decided to relocate from Camden to Gulgong, she was ready for a change of both career and lifestyle. Inspired by her son and his partner, who found their dream rural property in the area she made the move to a town she’d never heard of. “Having only one child, I didn’t hesitate to pack up and follow them out,” she recalls. With a Business Marketing degree under her belt and years of experience in finance, property management, and compliance, Elise brought a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm with her in the move. But it wasn’t her industrial background that led her to open Bowerbird Cottage - it was her passion for antiquing. Once settled, Elise realised that her love for buying and selling antiques needed a new outlet, especially in a smaller community where running a homebased business wasn’t viable. And so, Bowerbird Cottage was born - a quaint antique shop situated inside a small cottage just 400m from the main high street of Gulgong. Housing more than just antiques, thanks to Elise’s passion for supporting her community and her love of local cheeses, honey and teas, Bowerbird Cottage soon became a local favourite. Now, Elise is embarking on the next chapter with the launch of Bowerbird Cottage 2.0. She’s relocated to a store triple the size of the original cottage and undertaken an extensive renovation of a nearly complete 1930s building in the heart of Gulgong on Herbert Street. Moving to a town she had never heard of and opening a retail store with no prior experience was a leap of faith, but one she’s embraced fully. She’s involved in various charitable ventures, making her mark in Gulgong not just as a business owner but as an active community member. Elise is excited about this new phase, eager to welcome customers to her expanded space and continues sharing her love for antiques with the community. ___ @bowerbird.cottage bowerbirdcottage.com.au 86 Herbert St Gulgong Bowerbird Cottage: Gulgong’s New Gem for Antique Lovers I always try to push myself out of my comfort zone to grow and achieve. 8 | Mid-Western Living SPRING 2024 MUDGEE NURSERY: MORE THAN JUST A GARDEN CENTRE Mudgee Nursery has blossomed into more than just a garden centre - it’s become a local gathering spot for gardeners and daytrippers alike. Conveniently located near the town centre, the nursery’s entrance is marked by a striking gabion-walled shed that leads visitors into a lush, expansive space filled with an ever-growing selection of plants and garden essentials. The nursery is the passion project of Scott Lillis, a local plantsman and landscaper, and his wife Jayne. Scott began his journey in the region by running seed collection and production with Wollar Nursery in the early 1990s, and together with Jayne, they have nurtured this vision into a thriving garden centre. In September 2017, they opened Mudgee Nursery with a modest retail footprint. Since then, it has expanded to include extensive tree lines, a wide variety of shrubs, roses, perennials, veggies, garden art, and pots - a true cornucopia of gardening delights. Scott and Jayne have assembled a team of dedicated garden enthusiasts to manage the nursery’s retail operations, ensuring that customers receive expert advice and service. The experienced Greenlife team and attentive point-of-sale staff have played a crucial role in the nursery’s growth and success. The community has closely watched the evolution of ‘The Shed,’ a key feature of the nursery. The anticipation surrounding its opening was finally satisfied in May 2023 when the expanded retail space welcomed its first customers. Soon after, the buzz shifted to the arrival of the nursery’s own eatery Cafe 2850 which joined the Mudgee Nursery family in July of this year. Mudgee Nursery has become a destination not only for locals but also for visitors from Sydney, Wollongong, and beyond. The nursery’s established shade trees, privacy hedging examples, and water features create a laid-back atmosphere, offering a mini garden escape that transforms with the ever-changing seasons. With new residents frequently moving to the area, Mudgee Nursery prides itself on sharing local and regional knowledge, helping to ignite a passion for gardening in newcomers and supporting them as they learn and grow in their gardening journey. ___ @mudgeenursery (02) 6373 4278 13 Ulan Rd, Putta Bucca
SPRING 2024 Mid-Western Living | 9 Giant Mudgee: The Heartbeat of Cycling in Mudgee How a Family-Owned Bicycle Shop Became the Hub of a Thriving Cycling Community Giant Mudgee has become a thriving hub for cyclists over the past two decades. This family-owned bicycle shop, synonymous with quality and community, is run by locals Joel and Nikki Burke who have called Mudgee home for nearly 20 years. The family includes two sons, Lachlan (21) and Fraser (18), who are integral to the business, and their charming mascot, Lenny the pug. The inspiration to start their store arose from a local passion for biking and an evident gap in the market. As avid cyclists and parents of competitive bikers, the couple saw the need for a dedicated bicycle shop in Mudgee. Determined to fill this gap, they launched Ride Mudgee in February 2016. Their first shop on Market Street quickly gained popularity, and it’s growth and success gave them the opportunity to become a Giant Store and move to a larger location on Sydney Road which is where they’re located as Giant Mudgee today. Renowned for its wide range of products, the shop caters to all types of cyclists, from competitive racers to families enjoying weekend rides. “We pride ourselves on great customer service and keeping a large range of bikes & rider accessories. Whether your goal is winning a race, riding a technical trail, tackling a long weekend tour, riding with the kids around town or embarking on a new adventure we are here to provide the best advice, service and in-store experience possible to help you achieve it.” said Nikki With over 200 bikes in-store and access to a vast selection from Giant Bicycles Australia you’ll find a bike for all ages, sizes and purposes. Additionally, they offer a variety of accessories and apparel from top brands like Fox, Giro, Lazer, Bell, Shimano, SRAM, Quadlock and Lezyne as well as scooters, BMX bikes, and related accessories, making it a onestop-shop for all cycling needs. Their fully equipped workshop can service and repair all makes and models of bikes. Importantly Giant Mudgee isn’t a franchise, it’s a family owned and operated business run by long term locals who love supporting the local community through sponsorships and donations as well as participating in local rides and events promoting safe and healthy lifestyles. “We couldn’t do it without the support of all our awesome customers over the years. Not only just from Mudgee but the whole mid western region and beyond.” said Joel. As they continue to grow and evolve, the family remain committed to providing the best possible service, and are always happy to share their favourite rides around the region. Today, the hotel, located on the corner of Perry and Gladstone streets, is under new management, heralding a new era for the iconic Mudgee venue. Experienced publican Scott Still and Mudgee local Steve Harding officially took over the Paragon in July 2024, along with its luxury accommodation located next door, the McKenna Terraces. SPRING 2024 Mid-Western Living | 27 We are so excited to enter the loveliest season of the year with lots of new treatments and techniques to revive, reset & rejuvenate not only your skin but your soul. After much research, this season we’re introducing Gua sha (pronounced “gwa-shah”) - an incredible facial I have designed to not only treat your skin but to settle you mind and soul. Gua sha is an East Asian healing technique, using a small, smooth- edged tool to firmly stroke your skin in one direction. This can help improve blood flow and reduce inflammation. REJUVENATE YOUR SKIN FOR SPRING Marg Ottley has been in the beauty industry for over 40 years, and has lived in Mudgee since 1993. Ultimate Care Skin & Body Centre is a multi award-winning, multiservice beauty salon, specialising in skin rejuvenation and anti aging. Your “Ancient Revival Facial” will begin with traditional cleanse, exfoliation tailored to your skin concerns, followed by your Gua sha facial massage. We will then apply a refreshing hydrojelly mask with rose quartz eye mask, your therapist will then perform a neck & dec massage to relax you even more. Your treatment will conclude with our Youngblood minerals to have you glowing. The Ancient Revival Facial treatment will be available through September & October at a cost of $149. To coincide with Pink Up Mudgee, during October we will again be offering “THE PINK TREATMENT”. This treatment is a dermatological solution that stimulates the vitalisation of fiberblast cells which are the basic structural frameworks of tissues, by improving metabolism via a dynamic activation of its 56 components. We will donate $25 from each treatment to Pink Up Mudgee. It’s such a great way to treat your skin and help such a worthy cause. The Pink Treatment is $159.
