iNarrabri Magazine 9

Congratulations on your leader-

ship role. What was your initial

reaction when you learnt you

were elected school captain?

Giulio - My initial reaction was

surprise, followed by a feeling of

happiness, achievement and of

course responsibility.

Gemma - I was quite surprised

at first. This feeling soon turned

into excitement as I was eager to

start my role and make a change

at Narrabri High School.

What previous experiences have

you had as a leader?

Giulio - I used to be a councillor

on the student council in my old

primary school, Narrabri West

Public School.

Gemma - Throughout my pri-

mary and high school years, I’ve

held various leadership positions

within my local and school com-

munities. I have held roles such

as: SRC (student representative

council) member various years,

sport vice-captain, sports cap-

tain, vice-chair of the youth cen-

tre committee.

Do you believe leadership comes

naturally to you or is it some-

thing that you develop over a pe-

riod of time?

Giulio - I believe that some peo-

ple just have the natural talent for

being a leader but it is a skill that

will become more refined with

experience.

Gemma - In my opinion, some

are born with the qualities need-

ed to be a good leader, but such

characteristics develop over time.

You began your term of captain-

cy in term 4 of 2014; how have

you fitted into the role?

Giulio - Since I have become

captain, I have represented the

school by going to community

based events, giving speeches

there and running school pro-

grams with Gemma as well as

guide Narrabri High’s new Year 7s

around the school with the pre-

fects.

Gemma - Giulio and I have at-

tended a few events on the

schools behalf. These include;

hosting the 2014 NHS formal,

conducting orientation/transi-

tion programs for the 2015 year

7 class and delivering a speech

at the 2014 Remembrance Day

ceremony.

Are there any things you want to

achieve in your captaincy year?

Giulio - I would like to encour-

age students to participate both

academically and in sports and to

accept each other as individuals.

Gemma - I aim to represent my

year as effectively as possible in

2015. My year has a lot of ideas,

in particular we wish to change

the running of our formal.

What do you believe are some of

the qualities of a good leader and

who have you looked up to as a

quality leader?

Giulio - I think some of the quali-

ties of a good leader should be

a positive outlook on things,

confidence, being open to sug-

gestions from or listen to their

peers, making contributions and

displaying respect. As for a leader

I look up to, my mum because

she really leads by example and

she motivates me to do things I

usually would not try.

Gemma - Honesty, maturity and

effective communication skills are

essential. I’ve certainly looked up

to past school captains; particu-

larly Makayla and Justin, as well

as Aphrika and Matt.

How do you think you’ll be re-

membered by your peers and

teachers?

Giulio - Probably for big hair.

Gemma - I hope to be remem-

bered as a promising and proac-

tive school captain. I wish to rep-

resent my peers, teachers and

school as effectively as best I can.
