General Andre Cox the 20th Gen-
eral of the Salvation Army elected
in August, 2013.
What are the main programs
you are involved with?
We have a number of different
programs running including our
Church Service which is held each
Sunday at 10.00 a.m followed by
morning tea and bible study.
We have a very active Family
Store that runs from Mon - Fri
from 9.00 a.m to 2.00p.m.
Our Welfare Service is now called
Salvos Connect and people are
assessed via a phone line (1300
371 288). Once they are assessed,
they can come into the Salvos
Connect site to pick up the assist-
ance – referrals to other services
that may assist them and food
parcels when they are available.
This site also houses our Money-
care Financial Counselling, Positive
Lifestyle Skills Program and soon
to be Internet Café and garden.
We also provide the opportu-
nity for people who are doing
Work for the Dole, Probation and
Parole, Juvenile Justice and Work
Development Orders hours.
In times of crisis we also have
available our Emergency Services
team that help feed the com-
munity.
How do you go about fulfilling
your goals?
The only goal we have here at the
Narrabri Salvos is to give people
hope. We fulfil that by doing
life with people – meeting them
where they are at and helping
them achieve the needs / goals
that they have.
The Red Shield Appeal is prob-
ably your most recognised fund
–raiser. Where do locally raised
funds go and how are they
spent?
This is our major fund-raiser and
helps us support over one million
Australians each year. Our organi-
sation works to ensure that every
donation is used most effectively
and admin costs are kept to a
minimum.
Approximately 85c in every dollar
to the Salvation Army Red Shield
Appeal donated (one of the most
efficient admin rates of any char-
ity) goes directly to those in need
helping fund our vast network of
social and community services.
Locally the Red Shield Appeal
funds are used by our Rural
Chaplains, Financial Counselling,
Emergency and Disaster Relief.
People from our local community
who access our drug and alcohol
rehabilitation services in Tam-
worth, Central Coast and Sydney
have also benefited from funds
raised by the Red Shield Appeal.
How has the Salvation Army de-
veloped / grown over the years
in our local community?
As the Narrabri community has
grown and changed we too have
developed and grown with it. Our
services are assessed frequently
to fit with the local needs in the
community.
What might be a normal week
for you?
As an Officer in the Salvation
Army there is never a normal
week for me.
Monday to Friday you can gener-
ally find me on site at our Salvos
Connect Site / Family Store in-
volved in administration, counsel-
ling and store work. Friday nights I
visit a few of the pubs to hand out
our nationally published maga-
zine the ‘War Cry’ and collect
donations that go to supporting
our local work. On Sundays I have
the privilege of sharing the Gospel
and life with our Corp members
at Church.
Besides my general duties at the
Corps I’m a member of commu-
nity groups that are determined
to help and assist the community.
Personally I’m passionate about
God, my family, my animals, envi-
ronment and cooking.

Did you know? Arnott’s SAO
biscuit was created and named
after a Salvation Army Officer.
Arthur Arnott was the son of Wil-
liam Arnott (founder of Arnott’s
biscuits). It is believed that the
biscuit was named after Arthur
who had left the family business
to become a Salvation Army
Officer.
