What is the Allison Forbes life story in
three sentences?
I was born in Wee Waa to
a policeman Dad and stay-home Mum with
a brother, moved to Tamworth where I went
to school. I settled in Newcastle working at
Australia Post for 11 years then decided to
quit for music. It took me a little travelling
to find myself and my musical identity and
now I’m back in Tamworth as a full-time
musician!
How long have you been performing?
I started singing and playing guitar quite
young and have always had my finger in
the music pie in some way. I sang in the
choir at school, tried country music compe-
titions, fronted rock bands and even musi-
cal theatre.
Whereabouts have you played?
I have
played everywhere from outback Queens-
land, Brisbane, outback New South Wales,
Melbourne, Canberra… and the list contin-
ues to grow.
What’s been your most memorable per-
formance?
I was asked to perform at a trib-
ute to Anne Kirkpatrick earlier this year and
Anne was present. I was very nervous but it
felt great and she was thrilled!
Funniest moment on stage?
I’d have to say
a gig I played at Narrabri... the crowd was
loving the gig so much they started throw-
ing money at me for me to keep playing!
What can a Narrabri Audience expect?
I
play guitar and stompbox and do every-
thing old new, country, pop and a few of
my songs thrown in to show people what
I’m all about.
Who are your musical influences?
I lis-
tened to a lot of Australian artists growing
up such as John Williamson, Colin Bucha-
nan, Troy Cassar-Daley but I think my music
reflects a more folk influence such as Gillian
Welch or The Waifs.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton
When you’re not gigging, what are you
doing?
Trying to find more gigs, haha, and
writing.
Apart from music, what other interests
do you have?
I like to help out the local
Animal Shelter here in Tamworth. I try and
raise money for them when I can. They res-
cue animals from death row at the pound.
They’re called Heaven Can Wait. My part-
ner and I have a dog from them named
Dixie!
And finally, the big question... baked
beans or spaghetti?
Spaghetti till the end!
