Clinical Radiology
The Radiology Trainees Committee
(RTC) represents trainees at all levels of
the College and has formed again this
year with representatives from nearly
all branches. I’d like to thank departing
committee members and welcome the
following new members:
Dr Cara Odenthal (Secretary, QLD)
Dr Dave Eriksen (SA)
Dr Felix Paterson (SA)
Dr Anthony Cardin (VIC)
Dr Naomi Anning (TAS)
Dr Ben Addison (NZ)
Dr Amy Stringer (NZ)
As the new year shifts into full gear,
many trainees around Australia and
New Zealand will be knuckling down for
the biannual Part 1 and 2 examinations
taking place in March and April.
Needless to say it is a stressful time for
candidates as well as for the support
staff within the College and radiology
departments across both countries.
The digitisation of the written exams has
progressed steadily over the last few
years with Part 1 exams now completely
electronic as well as the film reading and
multiple choice portions of the Part 2
exam. Notwithstanding a few technical
hiccups over the last few sittings,
feedback from trainees has been
generally positive.
Although many Fellows and trainees
would consider a switch from film to
screen to be the ideal format for the Part
2 Vivas, reflecting on how radiologists
function on a day-to-day basis, the
substantial infrastructure and technical
considerations appear likely to limit the
transition in the near future.
The formation of training networks
continues apace in accordance with the
Australian Medical Council directions.
NSW in particular has made significant
progress to date with the formation of
three statewide networks. Challenges
remain, though networked training
offers significant benefits for trainees in
terms of exposure to a variety of clinical
environment and learning opportunities.
If you have any comments or issues
that you would like brought to the
committee’s attention, please contact
your branch trainee member, or you
