Scouts in the Environment
Over 20,000 Australian Scouts and Leaders were engaged in the
6th Scouts in Action Month, themed ‘Scouts in the Environment’
for 2015.
Scouts in the Environment month ensured Scouts experienced
and connected with the natural world. Scouts recognises
that young people need time outdoors for their physical and
mental health. Based on the World Scout Environment Badge,
participating Groups were provided with ideas and updates
Behind the promotion of the environment are an enthusiastic
team of volunteers. This year the team met to share and exchange
ideas to keep the environmental education element of our youth
program strong and robust.
Clean Up Australia Day 2016
Scout Groups made up almost half of the youth groups
participating in Clean Up Australia Day held in March 2016.
The 320 registered Scout sites were an increase of 8.5% on
the year prior, with more than 6,900 Scouts joining in to
remove an estimated 704 tonnes of rubbish from local
waterways, parks and other natural areas. Annual participation
in Clean Up Australia Day and National Tree Day in July are some
of the many ways that members live out the tenth Scout Law
“A Scout cares for the environment”.
International Scouting
International Scouting provided many opportunities for young
Australians to broaden their understanding of other cultures and
experience travel around the world.
Over 1,000 Scouts travelled to other international Scouting events
including the World Scout Jamboree, the New Zealand Venture
and the New Zealand Rover Moot. Members also participated in
Branch Friendship visits to Fiji, Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Africa.
International Events
In July 2015, 331 members, the largest Australian contingent to
a World Jamboree, attended the World Jamboree in Japan. Each
participant fully embraced the Japanese culture with maturity
and respect and proved to be great ambassadors for Australia.
Each World Scout Jamboree is a unique experience that brings
Scouts from all corners of the globe together in a great sharing of
cultures and values, and is an example of how so many cultures
can live together in peace.
Six-hundred and sixty Australian Venturer Scouts and Leaders
made up the largest Australian contingent ever to attend an
overseas event at the 13th New Zealand Venture in January
2016. Participants had an enormous range of adventurous
activities to choose from during the pre-tour, at the Venture
and on the post-tour including caving, white water rafting
and high ropes experiences.
Scholarships enabled five Rover Scouts to travel to Singapore,
Oman and the United Arab Emirates to experience Scouting in
those countries, and twenty one youth members participated in
Scouting exchanges to Denmark, England and Japan through the
Scout International Student Exchange Program.
