It is thought that its name was derived from an Aboriginal word describing an indigenous vine or the flight of a pigeon. Worongary was first subdivided for housing in 1979 and the local primary school was opened in 1993 and the Hinterland Baptist Church was established in 1995. Its timber church building was relocated from another site. Worongary is also home to Schmidt Farmhouse, tiny timber farmhouse, a slab barn and a creamery on Worongary Road are rare remnants of the early dairying industry of the Gold Coast hinterland. In recent times the property has been utilised as the Mudgeeraba Light Horse Museum, commemorating the history of the Light Horse and armed services on the Gold Coast.
