Cootamundra

25 On 25 October 1949 the Herald announced that the extensions to the Ampol depot had been completed and presumably the distinctive red Ampol branding had been applied to Tanks 2 and 3 in an advertisement for this readymade depot. Paid for by the taxpayers, the Ampol Depot served an important second life between 1947 and 1995. It was run by commission agents including Keith Oldfield, and Margaret and Brian Fuller. The Fullers ran the depot until the late 1980s and also managed Cootamundra’s Ampol service station. The majority of the Ampol Depot’s fuel supplies arrived in Cootamundra by rail tanker. The supplies were measured three times using calibrated dipsticks, once when despatched from Sydney, the second time on arrival in Goulburn and the third time on arrival in Cootamundra. All measurements varied according to the temperature and the agents paid on the average. Workers on the drum platform, Cootamundra Depot, April 1955.
