4 It is a distinct honour to be invited to officially open the 2025 Sculpture on the Farm Exhibition, now in its fifth iteration since its inception at Fosterton in 2018. This year marks a significant milestone as the exhibition is held for the first time at the picturesque Dungog Common. Established by Philippa Graham OAM, Chair of the Sculpture on the Farm Committee, the exhibition has, in just seven years, achieved national recognition among both creators and collectors of contemporary sculpture. Several exhibited works have even found homes beyond Australia’s shores, a testament to the calibre of the artists and the exhibition itself. It is truly inspiring that Sculpture on the Farm is devoted entirely to celebrating the talent and creativity of Australian sculptors—a powerful testament to its commitment to nurturing and championing homegrown artistic excellence. As my friend and Co-Presiding Officer, the Honourable Ben Franklin MLC, President of the New South Wales Legislative Council, recently observed: “We greatly appreciate the work being done by Sculpture on the Farm to showcase and support Australian artists, and we commend your ongoing efforts to bring art into public life, particularly in regional communities like Dungog.” The donation of nine sculptures for public display in the Dungog Shire, has already begun to enhance local tourism and enrich the cultural landscape of the region. I extend my sincere thanks to the volunteers and committee members whose dedication and hard work have made this exceptional event possible. To the participating sculptors, I offer my admiration for your creativity and vision, and I wish all involved every success in this inspiring endeavour. This generous assistance has made a significant contribution to the successful staging of Sculpture on the Farm Dungog. The Stronger Communities Programme Grant has enabled the effective documentation and promotion of the event’s activities, as well as a contribution towards the production of a comprehensive online catalogue, enhancing the reach, accessibility, and lasting impact of the 2025 exhibition. Create NSW Sculpture on the Farm extends its heartfelt gratitude for the support of the NSW Government through Create NSW for its generous and timely funding, which played a pivotal role in ensuring this major transition unfolded seamlessly. John O’Brien, Executive Director of Arts Upper Hunter recently reflected, “What a pleasure it is to be out walking among artworks small and huge, sited in a gorgeous landscape. Over the last few years, Sculpture on the Farm Dungog has established itself as a major regional festival, firmly rooted in the local community but with a reach that extends across Australia. Its move to the Dungog Common is a bold next step for enhancing community engagement.” Our sincere thanks also go to the team at Arts Upper Hunter, Suzannah Jones and John O’Brien, who shepherded the Create NSW grant with care and commitment. Their dedication and creative vision were instrumental in crafting engaging itineraries, with the invaluable backing of the Dungog Visitor Information Centre, as part of the inspiring Creative Valleys cultural tourism initiative.
