Insights on achieving success in sport and beyond
It’s been said that success is where opportunity and preparation meet. This session on the final day of
conference will feature two great Australians: John Bertrand and Anna Meares. Their personal stories
of commitment, persistence, teamwork and courage in the face of adversity will inspire all of us to
seize the opportunities we are presented with to succeed in sport, business and life.
Anna Meares has overcome obstacles that would stop mere mortals in their tracks, but her courage
and hard work have seen her reach legendary status in cycling. To recover from a broken neck and
win silver and gold medals in the Olympics and a host of world championship medals as well, requires
a resilience and steely mindset possessed by few. Anna’s appointment as Australian team captain and
flag bearer at the Rio Olympics is recognition of her persistence and outstanding leadership.
John Bertrand is one of Australia’s most respected leaders. He forged a name for himself as skipper of
Australia II, which in 1983 ended 132 years of American domination by winning the America’s Cup,
an achievement the Confederation of Australian Sport described as “the greatest team performance
in the last 200 years of Australian sport.” John’s journey took him through three America’s Cup
Challenges and three Olympic Games before he had assembled enough leadership knowledge and
skills to finally succeed. Most recently, John has taken on the role of President of Swimming Australia,
charged with the responsibility of leading cultural change and pursuing a vision of high performance
and winning success in Australian swimming.
Your speakers will share with you their approaches to leadership, teamwork and preparation for
success, highlighted by observations from their long careers – including the unforgettable Rio Olympics
experience. Not to be missed!
