New Business

16 | iNarrabri Magazine | June 2016

What was your first job?

My first full time job was

down at Campbells Nursery

(the old Faulkners Building)

working for Jenny Campbell.

It was a lot of fun! I love

gardening and plants so it

was a fabulous time in my life!

What career ambitions did

you have finishing school?

I had no idea what I wanted

to do! I wanted to have kids

and have horses. I have always

liked dressing up and beauty

stuff. I definitely was not

career minded!

How did you come to start

your own business?

I was finding it difficult to find

what I wanted jewellery and

clothing wise locally... once I

realised what my actual taste

preferences were! It can be a

bit hazardous buying online

with different sizing and

returns are simply a pain.

I was also at home at the time

with my newborn twins and

preschool boy, with a child in

kindy and needed downtime

and a sanity saver, so creating

little knick knacks became my

outlet.

I went on to create and sell the

jewellery at the local markets

and online, and it really took

off from there. I then set

myself some goals, went to

TAFE and did a couple of

admin courses, a Small

Business Management Course

and had this amazing

opportunity to start up the

shop when the twins started

Kindy. The stars all aligned!

In a sentence, describe what

it is that your business does.

It helps people walk to the

beat of their own drum.

Why do your customers

frequent your business?

Cause its amazeballs! And

I stock some seriously fab

clothing that is flattering for

every shape and size. Oh, and

my clay earrings, everyone

loves the earrings! It also

could be the music... slowly

converting the town to folk

metal! Mwahahaa!

What is a conception of your

business that you would like

to overcome?

It’s not just Goth and Skulls!

I have a range of beautiful

vintage inspired items, both

handmade and brands. There

is something for everyone.

What is the most enjoyable

part of your job?

I love helping ladies dress up.

And celebrating their own

beauty and uniqueness. Plus

I get to wear my favourite

outfits to work! YAY!

What is an aspect of your job

that you could do without?

I really, really loathe book

work. I mean seriously, where

is the fun in that?

What has been the best piece

of professional advice you’ve

been given?

The general gist of it is... be

authentic, be passionate and

never stop learning or

dreaming.

How do you deal with stress?

Good music, coffee/wine
