When I first went there for ‘O’ week, I
walked around for the whole entire day.
One of the buildings that they told us we
had to find was the Forum which is, if
anyone knows the University of New-
castle, it’s nowhere near anything else.
So I went for a walk around the cam-
pus looking for this Forum and doing
everything I could, hoping I didn’t get
lost. I ended up getting lost and never
found the Forum on the first day. The
University of Newcastle is bigger than
Wee Waa.”
“I ended up giving blood because in my
quest to find the Forum. I got lost and
came across a blood donor van. They
were there on the first day because they
knew they could collect lots and lots of
blood from fresh new students. I ended
up becoming a regular blood donor after
that and learned my blood type in sub-
sequent visits when they have to do all
that kind of testing. So that was my first
experience meeting people in Newcastle.
Inside a blood donor van.”
“Because I was so terrified and doe eyed
in the middle of this big city, someone
said to join a club. I did swimming but
they really didn’t have a swim club so I
decided to join hockey. It was like the
biggest club in the university and they
had grades for every ability, even the
new people like me. I ended up joining
the hockey club and that was the end
of all my social woes. I turned up every
Thursday night and tried to hit a ball
with the stick and had no coordination.
There was lots of air swings.”
“All the lead up to graduation day, all
the work, stress and preparation gone
before that, I felt that I could do any-
thing on graduation day. I didn’t feel
nervous at all. It wasn’t till I put on my
gown that I started to get really excited
about it. The fact that I could actually
see the end. At that point I realised it
was such a big thing. I would say to the
kids of Wee Waa, even if you don’t think
you’re going to get somewhere, try to
go to university. Try to leave town and
come back. I love Wee Waa. I adore the
little town but there’s so much on the
other side of the levee bank that you can
explore and bring back. Explore all you
can and bring at all back.”
