This folk dance depicts the Ilinden uprising
in 1903 against the Ottoman Empire and the
proclamation of the Krushevo Republic. Stage
representations portray the struggle of ordinary
Macedonians who were oppressed by the
Ottoman Turks for over five centuries .
Through song and dance, historical elements
of battles between Macedonian freedom
fighters (komiti) and Turkish soldiers are
represented as well as the oath of
‘freedom or death’ used by the Komiti.
