From the President

This is the last time that I put pen to paper for the "Vintage Metal", so

a little sad in some ways but looking forward to some new blood to

invigorate our Club.

We had the shocking news the other day that John Illig collapsed in

his workshop on Monday and was taken to Fiona Stanley where he

was straight to surgery, later having further surgery. I have just spoken

with Neil McCrudden as I write this PM on Thursday the 15th

(deadline day) so this news is as up to date as possible.

John Keenan, that man who will not die, phoned the other day to say

he had some motoring books from the library of "Dev" Harold

Dvoretsky a motoring journalist who had passed away some time ago and on the death of

his widow have come to us via John K. "Dev" was well known in the 50s and 60s, I myself

remember his articles, starting at the Daily News he moved on to the UK, where was the

English correspondent for Modern Motor and later freelancing. Net result being five cartons

of wonderful books for our Club and more work for our unsung Librarian Mark Jones.

Next General/AGM meeting (2nd of November) will be the last opportunity to purchase

discounted Club regalia, some great bargains and most opportune for some Christmas

shopping. Make sure you see Mike Barnes and/or Jean Atkins and get yourself a great deal.

Looking forward to a BIG number of members at the AGM, a very important day in the

year for your Club, car pool or whatever it takes to be there, most important.

Enough from me. Stay healthy, drive safely and continue to support your Club and it's

members.

This is a good news issue of

Vintage Metal

, with the lead article being

about Jack Del Borello taking the vintage racing message to a new

generation of prospective members, albeit not able to join the club for

a few years yet.

We have some fun pictures from the Dad's Army Tuesday, where Paul

Wilkins attempted to introduce the sport of log riding to the club. It'll

never catch on!

Our book review this month celebrates the life of Keith Duckworth,

who designed the DFV engine that kept Formula One alive for many years. It's a great read

and offers an insight into the man behind so many successful engines. I don't tell you where

to buy the book, because you all have your favourite book shops. Within Australia, most of

the books reviewed are available fromThe Pitstop Bookshop,

pitstop.net.au

.

I have used a story I prepared previously about why people go historic racing. It features

photographs I took at Barbagallo Raceway 20-odd years ago when the WASCC was running

historic races. My old friend, the late Andy Whyte was running his MG TD, Ian Boughton

raced the Cooper-JAP that was brought to WA for the 1951 AGP at Narrogin and I think it

was Max Gamble in the Ossie Cranston Special recreation.

Read and enjoy and please let me know of any interesting happenings in the club.
