Christmas in July
The 2016 Dad's Army Christmas in July
function was a visit to Rosco McGlashan's
workshop in Mullaloo to see Rosco's latest Land
Speed Record contender, Aussie Invader 5R.
Nobody could miss the Aussie Invader as you
walk in the door of the workshop. A 16 meters
long, cigar shaped machine with a long pointed
nose, it weighs in at about 25 tonnes and has
aircraft grade aluminium alloy wheels. (You
couldn't keep rubber tyres together at over 1600
km/h.)
Only 25 of the Dad's Army crew would fit
comfortably in the workshop and we arrived to
find tea, coffee and cakes waiting for us, supplied
by Graeme Whitehead. Suitably refreshed, we sat
up on the bleachers provided by Rosco's team
(except for yours truly, who was running around
taking photographs.
Rosco gave us a brief run down on his
background, from a precocious child (I'm being
politically correct here) who at twelve years old
was driving a Ford Customline to school. It
wasn't clear whether he was rumbled because he
