I was fortunate to be able to recently visit the UK to see my grandchildren at the same time
as both the Beaulieu International Autojumble and, in the following weekend, the Good-
wood Revival. Both are essential experiences for any 1950s-70s car nuts! Attending either or
both is to be with thousands of likeminded
international enthusiasts - we all speak the
same ‘language’ and in most cases all are
English speakers.
The Autojumble is held in the extensive
acreage of the National Motor Museum on
the edge of the New Forest in the south of
England and runs over the weekend before
the weekend of the Revival. People, both
exhibitors/sellers and customers, come from
all over Europe to be part of the fun. Close
accommodation for both events sells out
months before the day. My room at Havant
for the Revival was at the distinctly dodgy
Taste of India
hotel, but was only 11 miles away down country lanes. Staying at Lyndhurst
for the Autojumble means that you are there after turning 3 corners! Lyndhurst is also the
home to a brilliant Ferrari and Maserati
dealership - well worth a browse with other
international dreamers!
Part of the Autojumble is an area allocated
to general interesting cars sales (how about a
series 1 Land Rover for £47k!?) and Bonhams
have an ‘entry only by catalogue’ auction of
superior cars, ‘bikes and automobilia all held
in an enormous marquee. The Jeep shown at
right - still with its army numbers -
apeared to have been sitting under a tree
since 1944 - sold!
The Autojumble has sellers of all manner of
motoring and obscure car and memorabilia
‘stuff ’ from the early days of the veteran scene to the 70s era. Apart from buying for £15
from a Swedish seller second hand rear and front indicator assemblies and a clock for my
latest project ’68 Alfa Giulia, I also bought for £80 an original watercolour showing a Bugatti
