Dutchman 3 times over the two days as he searched for parts for his three and four wheeled
Berkeley micro car collection. On the Sunday I noticed some new side windows for a
Berkeley and 30 minutes later ran into ‘Dutch’ again and told him about the windows – my
Beaulieu good deed in assisting international motoring relations!
After spending most of the week with my grandchildren, daughter and partner in Calne
(with its own car museum -
http://www.atwellwilson.org.uk/index.html) and just down the
road from Stonehenge and the Castle Combe racetrack - it was time to get revved up for
the Goodwood Revival nostalgia extravaganza!
I wore my white ‘vintage’ overalls with brown leather (jeans) belt over the 3 days of the
event. 90% of attendees wear some kind of period clothing - whether it’s WW2 uniforms
(US uniforms are much more tailored than the
British period gear), overalls, 50s bodgie/biker
gear, English gentlemen and ladies attire with
lots of tweed, cravats and shooting sticks, many
50s girl ‘bobbysoxers’ in their polka dots and my
favourite variety of women - in mini skirts;
revealing a mixture of young and older long legs!
Amongst the crowd are various characters
playing the part of lazy road repairers, Wembley
football supporters, policemen, Mods and
Rockers on their respective scooters and
‘Beezers’ and, as the photo shows, the bikini girls
from Bikini Beach. I had to admire their ‘the
show must go on’ attitude on the miserable,
pouring rain Saturday, when the girls were still pouting and posing for the cameras - still in
their bikinis, but now protected by transparent plastic raincoats!
For Friday I had pre-organised lunch (£35 for 3 courses) at the Richmond Arms, which is
on the Lord March estate, but outside the track area; so there are a range of period cars that
deliver you door to door. Because I was travelling alone I chose the Subaru 360cc rather than
the following Rolls Royce landaulette to taxi me. There I met an Argentinian couple who
proudly showed me pictures of their ‘garage’ - more of a museum - and packed with Alfas
(“every model!”), Ferraris, Lancias, Vespas etc. When they finished their meal Carlos gave
me a note with his email and contact details with the offer of “contact me if you can’t find a
part for your Alfa” - such is the camara-
derie of the international car nut group!
This year the revival celebrated Sir Jack
Brabham’s 50th anniversary of Sir Jack
winning both the G.P. and the construc-
tors’ championships. Jack won his first
UK race at Goodwood and won his race
at the last race meeting in 1966 before the
Goodwood circuit was closed. Thirty one
of his driven cars, from a monster Galaxie
500 to GP and Indianapolis open
wheelers were paraded and driven,
amongst others, by his son David, Sir
Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, team
mate Jacky Ickx and SirJohn Surtees; the
only winner of MotoGP and the Formula
And her bathing
suit never got wet...
