BARANG ELECTS NEW

CHAIRPERSON

IMAGE ABOVE:

NEWLY ELECTED CHAIRPERSON

BARRY DUNCAN

Barry "BJ" Duncan is a proud Gomeroi

man whose family is one of the

mainstays of the Central Coast Aboriginal

Community. He has worked in both

the public and private sector and has

been instrumental in the establishment

of a number of organisations. He is a

founding member of Darkinjung Local

Aboriginal Land Council and is currently

serving his second term on the Board of

that organisation.

BJ is a father, grandfather and uncle

who completed all of his schooling on

the Central Coast before undertaking

a pre-apprenticeship training course

in carpentry and joinery at Granville

TAFE College before joining Concrete

Constructions a leading high-rise

developer. He was the college

Pre-apprentice of the Year in 1977 and

Apprentice of the Year in 1978.

He has worked at Mt Penang Boys

Training School (Acting Assistant

Superintendent) NSW National Parks and

Wildlife and the Department of Industrial

Relations to name a few.

Having a vast knowledge of the

Central Coast, BJ knows the challenges

that lie ahead for the Central Coast

Aboriginal Community in regards to

development of our lands for economic

independence and more importantly,

the sustainability of our organisations

through

Empowered

Communities.

He strongly believes that a lack of identity

and recognition for the Central Coast

Aboriginal Community is an issue.

BJ believes that the Barang Regional

Alliance Ltd. vision to support and

engage with Aboriginal organisations for

a level playing field with non-Aboriginal

organisations at a senior level of

Government is a fantastic concept.

Through strong leadership and even

stronger commitment, BJ brings to

the role of Chair a promise of good

governance and the opportunity for each

Aboriginal organisation on the Central

Coast to have a voice for the betterment

of our Aboriginal Community.

One of the main challenges that confronts

Barang Regional Alliance Ltd. is to make

many of the individual voices in our

Community come together as one loud

and clear “voice” firstly at the Barang

Regional Alliance Ltd. round table

then when negotiating with State and

Federal Government.
