BARA BARANG EDUCATES
LOCALLY AND WORLDWIDE
During a meeting in Sydney in July 2016,
the International Society for Research on
Aggression (ISRA), a professional society
of scholars and researchers engaged
in the scientific study of aggression
and violence, was treated to a Nyanga
Walang Aboriginal Culture Tour through
Bara Barang.
An inquisitive group of 49 lecturers from
12 different countries around the world
was given the choice of a Sydney Harbour
Bridge climb or an Aboriginal tour, with
the group choosing the latter. The group
members immersed themselves in the
Aboriginal culture of the Central Coast
through the Nyanga Walang tour guided
by Gavi Duncan, Manager of Cultural
Services and Tourism Coordinator of
Bara Barang.
The lecturers experienced gourmet local
bush foods and were treated to a sensory
and unique Aboriginal experience.
The tours are catered by The Coolamon
Catering on Green Central, an Aboriginal
hospitality and barista training facility.
“The bush tucker provided forms an
important aspect of a cultural education,”
said Denise Markham, Partnership and
Programs Manager of Bara Barang.
The opportunity for Bara Barang
to provide this immersive tour of
Aboriginal culture to international
leaders is a wonderful experience and
educational opportunity.
Gavi said, “Tourism plays an important
role in the educational experience,
promoting Aboriginal culture to a wider
audience, and giving the participants
the opportunity to engage on a
practical and spiritual journey through
Aboriginal eyes.”
Dr. Wayne Warburton, a Senior
Lecturer,
spoke
on
behalf
of
Macquarie University.
“Thanks for arranging the visit, it was
awesome, and the delegates of the
Conference said the Aboriginal Cultural
Tour was the highlight of their visit
to Australia.”
