BARA BARANG EXPANDS ABORIGINAL

EDUCATION THROUGH CULTURAL

AFFIRMATION PROGRAMS

Bara Barang is pleased to conduct

Aboriginal

Educational

Cultural

Affirmation programs throughout Central

Coast schools presenting approximately

eight programs per week.

The programs help students gain a better

understanding of their Aboriginality and

contributes to their academic successes.

The program engages both primary

and high school students and their

teachers to provide a better cultural

understanding, whilst actively promoting

Aboriginal education and practices within

the school curriculum.

Manager of Cultural Services and

Tourism, Gavi Duncan, spoke of Bara

Barang’s contribution to culture saying,

“We have established Aboriginal cultural

learning places within the school grounds

and feel that cultural engagement gives

a strong sense of self-identity and thus

promotes resilience in individuals,

empowering them to succeed.”

The program sees students learn about

local history and native medicinal plants

and bush food, along with students taking

part in varied traditions and practices,

including didgeridoo, dance, song, art,

language and storytelling.
