EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING
DARKINJUNG PARTNERS WITH
THE COMMONWEALTH BANK
On Thursday 2 June 2016, the partnership was formally
announced by the Commonwealth Bank’s Chief Information
Officer, David Whiteing, as part of their employment strategy to
raise the number of Indigenous employees to at least three per
cent of its Australian workforce.
The bank aims to have employment reflect Indigenous
population levels within 10 years.
“Working with community organisations like Darkinjung Local
Aboriginal Land Council allows us to invest in Indigenous
youth and help them to develop the skills that will be critical for
Australia’s future workforce,” said Mr Whiteing.
Sean Gordon, Chief Executive Officer of Darkinjung
Local Aboriginal Land Council, is confident the program will be
a success.
“We have plenty of ambitious, capable young kids up here who
are always looking for opportunities to enhance their skillset,”
he said.
“This program will provide our local Aboriginal youth with a
first-class learning experience in a local environment and I
know the staff at the Commonwealth Bank branches will be as
impressed with the trainees as the trainees are with them.”
The formal announcement was followed by the successful
placement of six local Indigenous School-Based Trainees in
March 2016 in Commonwealth Bank branches in and around
Darkinjung country on the Central Coast.
These trainees will be completing their Certificate II in
Business Administration.
Five full-time Indigenous Darkinjung Members have also been
placed into roles at local branches and will be completing their
Certificate III in Financial Services.
