Thinking innovation

Earlier this year our strategic planning processes identified that

we needed to consolidate our approach to Innovation.

Subsequently, in July, under the management of Matthew Lloyd,

Executive General Manager – Safety and Sustainability, Darren

Kwok was appointed as Manager Innovation. Darren has over 15

years’ experience in technology, systems integration and R&D in

the mining and engineering sector.

Since that time, Darren has picked up the innovation agenda and

the many great things that were underway around the business,

and this has been captured into a single strategic plan. This plan

covers many facets of our operations, including ground control

efficiency, post blast entry times, data capture from both light

and heavy equipment and reduction in damage and

maintenance costs.

As part of the strategy, an Innovations Committee with key

Barminco stakeholders will be formed to review and implement

captured ideas and solutions and, importantly, to ensure all

facets of the business are included in the process. A portal to

capture ideas will also be developed to facilitate easy lodgement

of all ideas throughout the business.

Our standards compliance

Barminco has recently been re-certified by SAI Global against

the Australian and International recognised standards ISO9001

(Quality Management), AS4801 (Safety Management) and

ISO14001 (Environmental Management).

These standards set out the requirements for effective

management systems for Quality, Safety and the Environment –

and being certified demonstrates that Barminco operates in line

with international ‘best practice’.

The auditors visited the Hazelmere facility, Nova and Rosebery

mine sites in June where they interviewed people, inspected

workplaces and reviewed records. The audit team verified that

all previous actions had been closed out and raised no further

non-conformances. The auditors were particularly impressed

with our efforts at continual improvement, including the Visual

Leadership program and Barminco’s Leaders Diary.

This is a fantastic achievement and the improvements in

our management systems correlate well with a significant

improvement in safety performance.

THE AUDITORS WERE

PARTICULARLY IMPRESSED

WITH OUR EFFORTS AT

CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT,

INCLUDING THE VISUAL

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AND

BARMINCO’S LEADERS DIARY
