“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing
and learn as you go.” The late American poet, EL
Doctorow’s words accurately captures the essence
and nuance of the writing process and this has been a
significant focus in English across years 7-10 this year.
Students have penned (or typed) essays, proposals,
narratives, poetry and reviews in response to their
study of a range of novels, plays, poetry and films.
Through their writing, they have explored a vast array
of themes and issues, whilst discussing the craft of the
writer and then applying a range of literary techniques
to their work.
It has never been a better time to be an English
student. The opportunities that technology provides
in enabling teachers to personalise the learning for
students has been a priority in the English classroom,
with the use of Dashboard. Teachers have provided
meaningful and timely feedback on written work,
which has allowed students to learn from their
mistakes, be acknowledged for their successes and
challenged to extend themselves.
Our students have continued to develop their love
of reading through regular wide reading lessons in
the library. The librarians have been invaluable in the
suggestions they offer to students. It was particularly
pleasing to see so many students in year 7 become
voracious readers and wholeheartedly participate in
the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Our year 9 students
were commended for their writing for an essay
competition organised byTheWhitlam
Institute.Itwas
also pleasing to see students achieve Merits, Credits
and Distinctions for the ICAS English Competition.
Our students are affordedmany opportunities towrite
for an audience beyond the classroom. Furthermore,
our year 9 and 10 students enhanced their study of
Shakespeare through interactive workshops.
Our dedicated and professional English staff have
really created wonderful opportunities for learning,
through the nurturing and supportive learning
environment in the classroom, to challenging each
student to achieve her best.
