Good news on the Taxi Transport

Subsidy Scheme.

People with disabilities will have better

access to taxi services in NSW after the

State Government announced measures

including doubling taxi subsidies for people

with disabilities.

For people with disabilities, the Taxi

Transport Subsidy Scheme Cap will double

from $30 to $60 per trip, while wheelchair

accessible taxi driver incentive payments

will increase from $7.70 to $15. These

measures will commence once approved by

NSW State Government early in 2016.

Ron provides support

throughout the admission

process and during people’s

stay in a villa, assisting with

paperwork that needs to

be completed, six monthly

inspections that occur and

complex situations like talking

with Centrelink and banks.

“The people I support

can be from diverse cultural

backgrounds and at times

their comprehension of

English is limited. Some of the

conversations can be quite

difficult and I am never quite

sure if the person has fully

understood what was being

discussed. I have made use

of an interpreter service on

occasion, which worked well,

but it I also thought about

different solutions.”

“I made inquiries about how

I could translate a document

from English to another language

and discovered Google Translate. This

program enabled me to type any document

needing to be given to the person in English,

and automatically translated into the non-English

language required.

“Once the report was finished, I gave it to the

person to check if the dialogue was correct and

understood. It proved to be very successful

and since that time I have translated other

documents for this person in this way.

“The outcome for the person is that all

documents relating to the service provided from

Ferguson Lodge are in their language. The person

can readily understand what is happening, which

greatly enhances the person’s ability to make

informed decisions about her life and future plans.

Transitional Liaison Officer Ron Gibson is

one of the first people someone entering a

Ferguson Lodge villa meets.
